I just saw and enjoyed "Malcolm X." Afterwards, my friend and
I remembered a particular scene differently and was wondering
if someone could clear it up for us.

It was when Malcolm/Red jarred Archie's memory and said that
he was owed $600 for the number that he played and Archie
checked and then went after him because he believed Red conned
him. That episode and others lead me to believe that Red was
conning Archie. However my friend insists that Archie had
forgotten. Not wanting to escalate the difference further, I'd
appreciate if others could clue us in on what you saw and if one (or
neither) of us is correct.

Oh, I have one last question. When Brother Johnson was finally
taken to the hospital, a doctor came out and said that he'd live.
Can anyone tell me who was the actor that portrayed the doctor?

Thanks.

Terry

In the book, Malcolm claims he never meant to hustle him; however, he
no longer remembered the numbers so he doesn't know who was actually
wrong. The movie did something interesting: Red asked that Archie
"combinate" the numbers he wanted. This means to put money on all
possible combinations of the numbers you choose (n!); however, when he
listed the possibilties he didn't actually list are the possible
combinations. Therefore it's possible that he did bet on the winning
number *but* that Archie only remembered the numbers that Red actually
listed.

On the other hand, I'm blanking on whether during the whole argument
on whether Red won or not that either of the principles actually
mentioned what they winning numbers were. So who knows?

Dont' remember.

They did, and it was one of the numbers that Red actually listed. So,
according to the movie, Red wasn't trying to hustle Archie, and Archie *did*
forget a number (I think the number in question was 218).

Well, George, thanks for giving me the creeps.

If you love intelligent films, go rent "The Conversation". Amazing
performance by Gene Hackman.

I'm curious about the Arriflex 535 camera - Only thing I know about it
is that it has built in time coding. Can anyone tell me more about it,
and its price as well? Thanks.

He wasnt conning him. During the scene when he was doing cocaine
(for the first time, perhaps?) He pulled out a wad off money and
started throwing it around, calling out numbers to Archie. And
I specifically remember him mentioning the number that had paid
off.

Actually, I thought he _didn't_ mention the number. Wait 'till
video, I guess....
