While enduring "The Firm" the other week, I noticed an interesting and in
fact rather major plot hole...

***SPOILERS***

When Eddie Lomax, played by Gary Busey, is enjoying the company of secretary
Tammy (Holly Hunter) on his lap in his office, they are interrupted by the
sound of someone coming into the office. Thinking it's Eddie's wife, Tammy
hides under the desk, which has a solid front board on it so she cannot be
seen. After a discussion, Eddie is shot dead by the hit men who've walked in,
after he shoots one of them in the leg with a gun he has hidden under the
desk.

Later, Tammy is able to give complete and accurate descriptions of the two
hit men to Mitch, even though... SHE NEVER SAW THEM! She couldn't have. The
only possible way would have been for her to put her head in front of Eddie's
gun and peer out the hole it made in the wood of the desk front, but the film
shows us that she did not do that. She ducked under the desk before they
entered the office, so she certainly didn't see them then.

This bothered me too. The only thing I could think of was this: Holly
Hunter states that her landlady said they came looking for her at her
apartment. Maybe the landlady described them in detail. This is a stretch
I know, but I thought it totally unbelievable that Hunter would be able
to see that the light-haired guy had blue eyes, given how dark the
office was, plus the fact that it specifically showed her ducking
under the desk BEFORE they walked in the room. The only problem with
my theory is how could she have known the guy was shot in the knee?

I think this is one inconsistency we're supposed to ignore.

I just assumed she got a look at the thugs through the hole in the
desk panel that Lomax shot through it.

She doesn't. She is shown cowering against the side of the desk, and the
assasins are shown leaving.

: I'm not sure about this either. The only thing I came up with was that
: she may have been able to see them in reflection from the window. I'm
: not sure this would have worked, but it at least is a possibility. I'd
: have to watch that scene again to more accurately decide whether it was

Yes, I have some ideas on this. I caught that when it happened too. But I also recall that they shot a hole in the desk, it would have missed Tammy
by about ohhh...6 to 10 inches, and she could have easily looked out it.
I don't think she could have seen around the body, and the window was much
higher up than she was.
