I just saw PULP FICTION. The waiter in that fifties theme
restaurant mentioned the name Derwood Kirby. Now I cannot sleep until I
can remember who that is. The name is very familiar. I seem to want to
connect it with an old television show. Someone help me.

In an episode of Rocky and Bullwinkle, also from the late 50's, early
60's, Moose, Squirrel, et al are searching for the "Kerwood Derby"...
it's a hat that makes people smart or something...

Oh well...

Think it's Durwood vs Derwood. Tall guy did announcing and some skits as
I recall. Is he still with us?

Durwood Kirby was also Alan Funt's co-host on Candid Camera for a number
of years.

I had the honor of blocking Mr. Kirby's car in an airport parking lot in
Florida in 1973. I was paged to move my car so that he could get out. When
I saw who I had blocked in, I was impressed; I never realized how tall he
was - he had to be at least 6"5"...

I would have said Durward. He was what they call a "TV personality".
He didn't act, he didn't sing, he didn't tell jokes.

Derwood (or Durwood) Kirby was a real person (a TV personality-type, I
think), who was the inspiration for Rocky and Bullwinkle's Kerwood _______
Derby. Also, I think that he tried to keep the episodes with his "name"
off the air, but I may be wrong (which is something that I often am).

PBS broadcast a program about Rocky & Bullwinkle a couple of years ago.
They said that Kirby _did_ try to bring some legal action against them,
but were vague as to the results. I know that when I recorded the whole
series when they were on broadcast tv a few years ago, those episodes were
not shown. Kirby has died since then, and Nickleodeon did broadcast them.
Maybe there was a prohibition of broadcasting them which ended when he
died, or maybe cable tv wasn't included in the prohibition.

And that was indeed a takeoff on the name of Durward Kerby (Kirby?), who
got pissed and sued them over it. Unfortunately, that's all I can remember
about the guy. I think he may have been a radio personality of the Fifties;
his name seems somehow linked in my mind with Dorothy Kilgallen's. Maybe
they were on the same program?

Yeah, I was driving in 1973; I was 20 years old at the time. Do the math;
I'm 41 now. I don't think that qualifies yet as old, unless, of course,
you happen to be 15; from that stage of life, anyone over 20 is old.
