Last evening I caught the final scene of The Elephant Man on cable.
What struck me was the familiarity of the sound track. It sounded
astonishling like that of the main theme in Platoon. Having not seen
the full movie in a number of years I'm not sure if this portion of
music is used throughout the movie or just the final scene.

I seem to recall that EM preceeded Platoon by a number of years so the
questions are:

- Am I recalling the Platoon sound track wrong or has anyone
else noticed this?

- Were the sound tracks done by the same composer?

- Was this music lifted directly by Stone for Platoon?

Thoughts?

I don't recall who composed either of the soundtracks so I can't answer that.
However, I do know that the Platoon dirge was a new composition. I know because
there was a big thing in Vancouver (where I am) about the Vancouver Symphony
Orchestra playing the music for it when it came out.

I e-mailed Jeff about this earlier today, but for anyone else interested,
Jeff is referring to Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings. That is the music used
in both Platoon and The Elephant Man. It is used in other films and TV shows
and even some commercials.

Although I have not seen ELEPHANT MAN, I do know that the theme from PLATOON you hear is actually Samual Barber's Adagio for Strings (since most of George Delerue's score was thrown out). Most likely that is the piece you hear at the end of ELEPHANT MAN.

Of course, this is just speculation

Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings is the correct answer to what
is the said music in Platoon.
