And what about you ??
I didn't really like _Nell_ that much. I thought Foster was way over the
top. Her portrayal was more "annoying" than "moving." I think Winona
Ryder's performance in _Little Women_ was *far* superior.

Since you asked, and since I just saw it recently, out of a ridiculous need to
have seen all of the Oscar-nominated performances (though BLUE SKY didn't get a
post-nomination run in NY, so I'm hosed there)...I thought it was dreadful. I
found the script mawkish and phony, the acting (with the exception of Foster,
about which more momentarily) mediocre, and the "nature=freedom;
city=corruption theme hackneyed and tiresome (you can attribute this to my New
York residency, if you like). However, it did have what was for me the
funniest moment in any 1994 film, though certainly laughter wasn't the response
Apted & Co. expected or hoped for: I speak of the moment in which Liam Neeson
tenderly comforts a distraught Natasha Richardson in Nellish. In fact, any
scene which included Neeson speaking Nellish was a hoot ("tay-ayyyyy in the
weeeeend!").
As for Foster, I can't complain about her performance, but I have the same
problem with her in this role that I had with De Niro in AWAKENINGS: I was
never able to forget that she was Jodie Foster, actin' up a storm. Actually,
maybe I *can* complain about her performance, because I completely believed
Daniel Day-Lewis as Christy Brown, despite having seen him in at least three
prior roles. I think Foster is a fine actor, but she doesn't seem to me to be
able to completely submerge herself in another person, which is what a role
like Nell requires.

I'd tend to agree. While there's no doubt that Foster is a great actor
and did a good job with an unusal part, the story itself was pretty
lame. And I agree with the previous poster who said that every time Liam
Neeson spoke "Nellish", it was quite hysterical. Basically, I think it
showed a certain amount of talent on Jodie's part, and that's about it.

Well, I loved almost the entire movie - except for the ending courtroom
scene.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, and don't appreciate people saying stuff about "retards"
winning Oscars this year. Anyone who saw it knows she WAS NOT a retard. Yes,
parts were a bit hokey. And Natasha's southern accent sucked, but Jodie Foster
is a great actress and the NC hills are beautiful.

Personally, I was bored. There wasn't alot going on and you
just knew where the story was going. I could't wait for it
to end. I do think Jodie Foster played her part well. But that
man (I'm sorry, I don't remember his name or his characters name)
the one who bonded with Nell, I didn't care for his acting at all.
And after a while his voice grated on me.

I'm sorry for you.. but if you didn't appreciate Jodie's performance in "Nell"
it means that you don't know what a wonderful actress is.
And I'm not sure you could do as well as she did...
Jodie had a nomination but she deserved to win !

Not necessarily. I, for example, failed to appreciate Jodie's performance
in "Nell," and I know full well what a wonderful actress she is. In fact,
all I could think as that abomination trudged through to its silly
conclusion was, "Gee, Jodie's a wonderful actress. How'd she end up
chattering away like an imbecile in a poorly-made, crushingly obvious
bore like this?" I apologize for my harsh tone, but I'm still getting
over the sheer wretchedness of that film. I'm still trying to decide
which was worse: The abysmal closing speech to the courtroom, which drew
on every awful "wonderful-naive-but-wise-character-gives-an-inspirational-
lesson-to-us-all" cliche, the scene in which she was drooled over by
rednecks in the town saloon, or the scene in which, in order to heal
Nell's fragile psyche, the two psychiatrists determine that what she
really needs is to see Liam Neeson's penis -- the single stupidest
decision in the history of film psychiatry, with the possible exception
of Barbra Streisand's decision, in "The Prince of Tides," that the only
thing which can heal Nick Nolte's fragile psyche is a good roll in the hay.
Okay. I think I'm done. I feel better now.

I'm still collating my thoughts on JoDie FoSTeR's role in NeLL. I think
it's hard to decide how good her acting was, cause there aren't any other
films where there isn't any proper speaking.
