G'day all,
I just saw "Accidental Hero" with Geena Davis, Dustin Hoffman and
Andy Garcia, and noticed that Chevy Chase was also in it. HOWEVER,
I could not find his name anywhere on the credits, neither at the start
of the movie nor at the end of it.
Can anyone tell me the reason for this? It seems strange that someone
as famous as Chevy would not want his name appearing on the credits,
especially seeing he had a reasonably major part in the film.

Thanks in advance,
Dave

This happens now and then. You probably noticed Chase played a not so

I think it is a real shame when actors do uncredited cameos. I think
that they usually add a great deal to the movie, and should be recognized.
My favourite example of this is the movie "The Adventures of Baron
Munchausen" (Spelling may be wrong) in which Robin Williams plays a
dual personality planet ruler whose head detaches. He wasn't in the
credits, and I always wondered why. Of course, in every video guide you
buy nowadays, if you look up that movie, his name is always listed and
almost always one of the first few.
The same thing with Kirk Douglas in Oscar. His name was ommitted from
the credits as well. I don't know, maybe they were embarrassed to do these
movies?

How about Bill Murray playing a not so small part in "Tootsie?" Actually,
he must be in the credits (or not?) but I went knowing about Dustin and

it worked for me. I still crack up when he says to Michael Dorsey,
"You slut!"

I think you are thinking of "Hero" -- you've accidentally put another
word in the title.

Yup, Chevy Chase was in it.
Also interesting was that it was directed by Steven Frears, who
did the (much overrated, sez-me) "My Beautiful Laundrette" plus
"Prick up your ears" and "The Grifters". He has a new movie out
with Colm Meany, anybody seen it?

Actually outside the states it was released as accidental hero.
Quite deliberately I think....

Not so much embarrassed, but it might have been good taste. Robin
Williams had really small parts in "Baron Muchausen" and "Dead Again"; while
memorable, the movies didn't rise or fall on his performances, same with Kirk
Douglas in "Oscar" and Ken Branagh in "Swing Kids". I'm not sure about the
other two, but I know Williams and Douglas had their names in the end credits
for "Dead Again" and "Oscar". They went (mostly) uncredited to avoid having
the audience think they were coming to a Williams, Douglas, or Branagh movie
and being disappointed in the movie they saw.

It's been happening the last few years here quite a bit. Alan Arkin
wasn't billed in "Havana," for example, or Robin Williams in Terry
Gilliam's "Munchausen" picture. By some accounts, the stars reckon that
if they're only going to get insignificant billing, they'd rather skip it
alltogether. More and more roles that used to be billed "and a special
appearance by...." or the like are now in this odd category.
In the states, by the by, the film is called "Hero." I happened to
interview the director today (Stephen Frears). Nice chap.

Think that he has a contract with Warner Bros., and Hero was made by Columbia, so
he didn't get his name on the credits....

I can do nothing more than agree. I saw the movie some weeks ago and
I then made a bet with one of my friends that the guy in the office
had been Chevy Chase. I lost since I couldn't prove it!
Irritating!

I think this has less to do with image than with the fact that it's too
small a part to get a big credit for, but the actor is big enough to
warrant such a credit. Case in point: Raul Julia in Havana, Bill Murray in
Tootsie, Jack Nicholson in Broadcast News, and Robin Williams in Dead
Again and Baron Munchausen. In the case of Bill Murray, the part was
almost big enough to warrant a costarring role (it was more than a cameo).
It would be dishonest for the producers to say "Jack Nicholson in
Broadcast News," so he choose not to be credited at all. Often these parts
are done as a favour to the director (again, for example, Jack Nicholson
starred in James L. Brooks' previous movie, Terms Of Endearment).

"Accidental Hero" was the British title of "Hero"

According to the Criterion laserdisk, the production company had run
out of money to pay Robin what his agent wanted for named recognition,
so they were forbidden by agreement to use his name in the credits or
even *press releases*. However, they snuck his face into the trailer. :-)

The battle behind the scenes of this wonderful film is almost as
unbelievable as the Baron's adventures. Joe Bob says check it out!

"Hero" is called "Accidental Hero" in Europe. I keep thinking about
"The Accidental Tourist" (also starring Geena Davis) whenever I hear
"Accidental Hero".
