Um. Well, I've got a video here - "The Abyss Special Edition" which I bought
in the UK, because I live there. Here's some of the blurb from the back of
the box:
"This restored cut includes 28 minutes additional material and, says
director James Cameron "...is now the film we set out to make five years
ago... and fulfills the original goals of the script".
The differences are, as far as I can recall, mainly at the end of the film.
You will recall that the hero (damn - forgotten his name) is taken by an
"alien" to a chamber in the underwater city in the abyss, and just manages
to get his suit open before he runs out of dissolved oxygen. In this
version, he then spends a while trying to communicate with the "aliens".
They indicate that they have been watching human television transmissions
and generally studying us, and they proceed to cause massive tidal waves
which threaten to drown various cities etc. Of course, nobody topside knows
what's going on, they only know that parts of the ocean are forming massive
tidal waves. However, just as the're about to break all over the cities they
- um - stop. And hang in midair. There's a *great* shot of the waves
motionless seen through the golden gate bridge. Anyway, back down below the
hreo asks "why" and gets the reply "Knew this was a one way trip - but you
know I had to go." (Or whatever the quotation is.) i.e. Humans can be okay
sometimes guys. The waves then recede, and only then to we get the part in
which the city rises up under the ships.
Hope this is what you were asking about.
