The quote is from a movie made in 1980. It also contains the line;
"Why why why why" The movie is NOT The Elephant Man- although it
contained the quota "I am not an animal" it didn't have "why..."

Said by John Hurt (as John Merrrick) in David Lynch's The Elephant Man

I think you will also find it in _Spartacus_. There is a scene in
which Peter Ustinov as the owner of the slave school makes a present of
Jean Simmons as the beautiful slave girl to Kirk Douglas as Spartacus. Then
Ustinov wants to watch them have sex. Spartacus objects with the above quote.

"The Elephant Man" starring John Hurt and Anthony Hopkins. Based on the
play. Good movie!

I'm sure it has been used often, but the most memorable use I
can think of was in "A Man Called Horse." A Richard Harris film
from around 1971.

I think, among the others mentioned, that Michael York said it in "Island of
Doctor Moreau."

I think the real Elephant Man, John Merrick, said this. It was
also in the various adaptations of his life.

Doesn't Kirk Douglas' use of the line in "Spartacus" pre-date all the
other examples given in the thread?

Sorry to nitpick: The Lynch movie was based on the two Elephant
Man books, not the Pomerance play ("or any other dramatic adaptation.")

The Elephant Man is correct.

Also said by Kirk Douglas in "Spartacus".
