It is a group called "Clannad." The song is called Theme from "Harry's
Game" and is used in the Volkswagen commercial.

Twas an Irish group called Clanned. It is composed of relatives of the
better known performer Enya (Whose "Sail away" song is used in Crystal Lite
commercials). Their video was being watched by Patrick Bergin when his
character was "visited" by the IRA.
They also supplied some music to the recent _Last of the Mohicans_.
They do have albums of their own out, don't know if they are on the soundtrack.

The opening/closing credits, are composed by James Horner, who uses
'Traditional Irish Song', and a soloist sings the lyrics (Cant remember
her name, but it is printed on the soundtrack.)

Clannad is the group. Yes a CD is available. I have one of Clannad and the
Patriot Games theme is on it. Sorry, I don't have it in front of me right
now.
There is some car commercial that sounds like it is one of Enya's pieces.

It was NOT Clannad playing over the begginning/closing credits of
"Patriot Games". It was compositions by the film composer, James
Horner, who used "Tradtional Gaelic Song", with Maggie BOyle as the
vocalist. The Clannad Track, called "harry's Game" was used in a scene
on a highland, about 45 mins into the movie.

Maggie Boyle, with back up vocals from Clannad lead Maire Brennan.
Check out alt.music.enya, fi you can. There were several threads
about this song there for about a month now. They posted the complete
Clannad discography, which might still be there.
The video is out on PastPresent, a video available from BMG I believe.
For "Theme From Hrry's Game" I mean.

last time i heard, it was Po'l and Ciaran (or it may have been the Duggens)
who composed this, not the scorer Horner. Also, the music repeated over
and over again on the tin whistle is either a traditional song, or a Clannad
arangement, because all throught the movie whenever it played, I hummed
the rest of the song to myself trying to figure out where I'd heard it before.

I'm not sure why you think this is sad. I'm not an Enya fan, but I am a
Jeopardy/Seinfeld/etc fan...so I know Enya's song from TV.
*shrug*
Just sorta makes sense to me. Doesn't sound sad. It's not like TV has
replaced music or anything...
(Sorry, this doesn't have anyhting to do with movies)
Oh, how sad this life is, when we identify songs by which commercials they
were in!!!
BTW, there was a commercial for some dog food that used a mutated version
of a song from "My Fair Lady" and I never knew that it was a "real" song
until I heard the musical years later and identified it with the song
from the commercial. I repeat: how sad!

The Singing in the opening was performed by Maggie Boyle. It is mentioned
on the soundtrack, that it's based on a traditional Gaelic song.
The track "Harry's Game"was sung by Clannad.
Both songs are available on the original soundtrack published by the Film-
music-Label "Milan".

No, this is not the music heard during the opening and closing credits.
Their song "Harry's Game" was used during the farmhouse ambush scene, but
this is the only music by Clannad in the film.
The music for the rest of the film, including the title sequences, was
composed by James Horner, and the vocal is credited to Maggie Boyle, who I
am not familiar with but apparently records for Run River Records.
The CD soundtrack is available, on RCA if you're in the US or Canada, JVC
if you're in Japan, Hong Kong, Korea or Taiwan, and on Milan Records in the
rest of the world.

I was under the impression that Po'l and Ciaran (or it may have been one of the
Duggans) worked on the opening/closing song. Also, Maire Brennan does do
back-up vocals for Boyle.
LJC, who has posted loads about Clannad in alt.music.enya

No, i was defintely Maggie Boyle who was the vocalist on the
opening/closing credits of Patriot Games (according to the Soundtrack
CD)

On the CD, there is only one vaclaist that can be heard, Maggie Boyle as
credited.
Perhaps we need this in a FAQ, if we can all settle on an answer :-)

I knwo that. Boyle sang, I think Pol did the arangement and
they played the instruments.

Funny, I just listened to it 5 minutes aoe, and for parts of it, there
are back-up vocals, and I could swear they're Maire. I think I'd know
her voice, as I have almost every clannad tape, plus her solo album.
They may not have credited her, but the inlay card hardly is choc-a
block with info.
>Perhaps we need this in a FAQ, if we can all settle on an answer :-)
I think someone is working on an Enya/Clannad FAQ over in alt.music.enya

James Horner is the composer in question, and you're probably thinking of
Aliens, not Alien. Yes, there is a piece in Patriot Games taken from Aliens,
but you know what? It's not even by Horner--it's Khatachurian's Gayne
Ballet Suite. Don't get me started in regards to Horner ripping things off.
