Electronically, I mean. I certainly never expected such resonance and power
from him.

No. This question has been addressed in the Disney group. Benson has been
on talk shows and said that it was his real voice, not altered in any way.

It sounded a lot like Worf on Star Trek: The Next Generation
- when he was a Beast I mean.

There was, I think, a little extra resonance for that threatening "echo"
effect on some of his lines, but the basic sound of the voice was
definitely Robby's. He has proved as much in several appearances on tv
recently, when called on to demonstrate.

As far as I know, no. The people at Disney were amazed also when he
tried out for the part. I thought he did a wonderful job.

Doesn't mean much to me unless he did the voice in person, live. Did he?

OK. Maybe this will straighten things up a bit. Perhaps the reason
GMS is so incredulous about Benson's "real voice" being the one coming out of
the Beast's mouth (maw?), is because the one most people are used to is *not*
his real one... Let me 'splain:

When Robbie Benson started his career it was in voice work for radio,
TV, etc. His voice went right from a high youthful pitch to a deep bass after
puberty. So when he got his start in movies he had to adopt a higher speaking
voice in order for it to fit his youthful appearance. He was choosen to do the
voice of the Beast because of his natural rich bass, and his wide range of
pitch and experience.

All of this info comes from various interviews with the actor himself
which I have seen in the paper and on TV.

Hope this helps clear things up!

I know it's irritating to read unattributed anecdotes (and this
one certainly is, since a friend told it to me who claims he
heard it in an interview with Benson), but...

Apparently Rob Benson's kids were not at all surprised to hear
the Beast's voice after seeing the preview for _Beauty and the
Beast_. "That's Dad all right, telling us to get to bed." :-)

I think his first "hit" was Ice Castles. He recently starred in
and directed (I think) a movie with Burt Reynolds and some other
big names that I can't remember now-- he was talking about it on some
CBS show. I don't think it has been
released however. For the record, Benson has done quite a lot
of voice work-- the only one I can remember right now is his
voice as Prince Valiant (some afternoon cartoon).

And, in fact, on filler spots on the Disney Channel where they've talked
about the film (they're clips from the "Making of" special that's aired
on the channel; I haven't seen the special myself), there's a bit where
Benson is talking in his "normal" voice about his part, and in mid-sentence,
he'd go into the "Beast voice". It was really quite a surprise.

Yes, he did do the voice. Like he would lie about it anyways.

I apologize for inferring that an actor would in any way exaggerate their
skills, involvement in a movie, or the difficulties encountered in making
a movie, in particular due to the integrity that every actor has. And
especially, of all people, Robbie Benson. In any event, given the
powerful evidence you cite, I have no alternative but to agree.

DON'T forget National Lampoon at the Movies. Or is that covered by one
of the titles given. Frankly I couldn't stand Benson 'til I saw that
one. Hilarious! (The part that was a parody of the Wambaugh copy movies.)

In Mix magazine, a pro sound production trade monthly, various folks
from the production crew were interviewed. Despite what Benson and
others might claim, the folks who did the actual work of preparing the
soundtrack explained that they, among other things, mixed and cross faded
his
vocal track with various animal sounds (camels being a fave!), and
also used some pitch shifting (although not a whole lot). And they also
did lots of reverb and echo tricks.

Robby Benson also provides the voice for Prince Valient in the Family
Channel's 1/2 hr. animated show of that name. I think it is on Tues.
nights at 8 or 8:30. It is not very true to the Hal Foster strips
(which are beautifully written and drawn) but it is a good show for kids.
