I just saw _Malice_ tonight (w/Alec Baldwin & Nicole Kidman) and I have
some questions: (1) Who got Tracy (Kidman) pregnant? Jed Hill (Baldwin)?
(2) Was Tracy involved in an affair with her lawyer at all? (3) Was Dr.
Lillianfield just a made up name for Jed Hill?
The movie wasn't as good as I thought it would be. What do others think
about it?

I like whodunnits and old fashioned thrillers. "Malice" could have been
better with a little wit. It tried to substitute wit w/ sex which is
a mistake. "Blink" tried the same combination and also dragged. If we
were supposed to suffer such movies gladly, there wouldn't be fast
forward buttons on our VCRs. The old fashioned, Margaret Rutherford/
Miss Marple movies are more fun.

No.

Yes.

I thought it was well acted. I loved the red herrings in the beginning, but
it lost me with its totally contrived main plot and some really ridiculous
implausibilities (like that Baldwin could drink like a fish and still perform
an operation).

I agree, it could have been better, but basically I thought it was pretty
well done. I liked the way the plot focus shifted about three times
before it finally settled in on the actual main theme. I thought
Nicole Kidman did a superb American accent. And I've always thought Alec
Baldwin was a good actor, having followed him since he played Valeen's
evil religious brother Josh in "Knots Landing."

Yes. The clincher was that her husband was sterile (no sperm). Aside
from immaculate conception...
It's really a movie best watched twice because the first time, you
view things thinking about them from one viewpoint, then you find out
at the end that nope, that ain't it... so then things don't make
sense. At least a lot didn't make sense to me until I watched it
again (on videotape).

I don't think so.
(3) Was Dr.
>Lillianfield just a made up name for Jed Hill?
Pretty much; it was a cover and setup.

I thought MALICE was okay, but I had a couple of problems with it:
1) The first twenty minutes or so really drag
2) I NEVER EVER want to sit through another movie that uses a serial
rapist/killer subplot for such a contrived reason.
Generally speaking, I think this whole "Psycho Thriller/Killer" genre
("Unlawful Entry," "Single White Female," "Basic Instinct," "Blink,"
"Jennifer 8," "Sliver," "The Temp," "THe Crush," "The Hand That Rocks the
Cardle," et al) is pretty well played-out at this point. Time to retire it
and bring it back in five or ten years, when some fresh ideas have been
allowed to accumulate.

Malice could have been done a lot better if they'd scrapped it, and started
again. I've never seen such a contrived plot in all my life, and it had so
many twists and turns, it just got ridiculous.
I couldn't figure out why Kidman could even consider having an affair with
Baldwin after he'd botched up her ovaries.
There were only a couple of at-first interesting lines of dialogue, which were
used in the only clips that were shown such as the 'God complex' bit.

Ahem. If you were going to plan such a caper, wouldn't it be a great
idea to *pretend* to drink a lot in public, so as to make the lawsuit
settlement even larger when it came out? It's not hard to fake drinking
(or take small sips) and dump parts of your glass as you wander around
playing pool or going to the bathroom.
Try *watching* the movie next time. He *didn't* botch up her ovaries.
*After* they started having an affair, they hatched a plan together
to make loads of money. She would take a drug that would simulate
bad ovaries, then he would "botch" the operation on purpose so she
could sue and they could both get filthy rich from the malpractice
settlement.
You're right! Mea culpa...
How could I have missed it...
I retract the statement.
I still think the plot was inordinately convoluted...
