The joke is funny because it breaks the fourth wall. The person
who answers "No that just Ted Danson" is Woody Harellson(sp?)
Both Woody and Danson are on Cheers, Danson being the star and
Woody being the sidekick. In that context the joke is funny

The "joke" is that the actor who says "No, it's Ted Danson" is
Woody Harrelson who costarred with Danson on "Cheers." It was
obviously a friendly ribbing from one to the other.

The person who says "no, that's Ted Danson" is the
Woody Harrelson character. Ted and Whoopi, I mean Woody ;),
were co-stars on the long-running tv show "Cheers," where
the cast members were notorious for playing jokes on each
other.

Now that I think about it, another cast member of Cheers
was in Doc Hollywood. One of the three ladies who welcomed
the MJFox character into Grady, Frances Sternhagen, played
Cliff Claven's ma on Cheers.

Implying Ted Danson is not a star.
(There may be some truth to that statement. I mean what has he done
that's worthwhile other than 3 Men and a Baby?)
(Don't tell, I know! 3 Men and a little lady. Ooooooo!)

A) That's assuming "3 Men and a Baby" was worthwhile. I just
rewatched it. Arrgh, I can't believe I liked it the first
time around.
B) He was good as Officer Ian Campbell in "The Onion Field".

But most importantly, the line was said by Woody Harrelson
who co starred with Ted in Cheers. (And I'll add to the urban
myth by saying that the line was ad libbed by Woody Harrelson
in the making of the film.) So the line was a bit of an in joke
for people who know Cheers.

Which in terms of meaning, that you only have to know that Woody and Ted Danson
were both members of the Cheers cast, includes everyone that watches TV and
films.

This is similar to a joke in THE MILAGRO BEANFIELD WAR. A women is
buying groceries and the shopkeeper stops her from buying Paul Newman
salad dressing, saying that it's "no good." The movie was directed
by Robert Redford.
