It is indeed Emmanuelle Beart, starring opposite Michel Piccoli as the artist.
The movie is actually closer to four hours long, I believe (it's been a few
years since I saw it), and I would estimate that Beart is nude for at least an
hour of that time, if not longer. However, while Ms. Beart is unquestionably
lovely, and her unclothed body is not unpleasant to look upon, anyone seeing
this movie with the expectation of being aroused will be disappointed. The
nudity quickly becomes mundane, just as it does when a nude model poses for you
in an art class, and the camera is more likely to linger on Piccoli's pen or
brush (a real artist stands in for Piccoli's hands--don't recall the name) than
on Beart; there are shots of the artist's hands at work that literally last
several minutes. It became quite hypnotic for me at times.
Anyway, while I'd recommend the film to those who enjoy slowly-paced art-house
fare, I wouldn't recommend it to those whose potential interest is merely
prurient. I would direct them to HENRY & JUNE.

Well, perhaps I exaggerated a tad, but they were nude for a LOT of it!
And I do agree that they were important. And what an opening scene, eh?

It also has my favorite love scene of all time (and they're both
fully clothed at the time!): The one when Betty's having one of
her depression fits, and has put on tons of really ugly makeup,
and Anglade just looks at her, then covers his face in food, so
he'll be as ugly as her. That just broke my heart!!

The original title of 'Betty Blue' was '37,2 le Matin'
Its director was Jean-Jacques Beineix and starred Beatrice Dalle and Jean-Hugues Anglade,
as well as Gerard Darmon and Consuelo de Havilland.

Agreed! I absolutely adore ULB! The book is probably my favorite
book in the whole world, and I was skeptical about a movie of it,
but I thought it was great! It didn't get into the philosophies
of Milan Kundera as much (for example, what he means by the
"unbearable lightness of being"), but they did a very good job
of telling the story. And I fell in love with Daniel Day-Lewis.
What a sexy guy! (of course, he's still no Val... :-) )

Mathilda (or Matilda) May. She was also in "Naked Tango", a film with a
very misleading title but a ton of atmosphere, thanks to Juan Ruiz

The actress in Lifeforce was Mathilda May.
Directors always shoot nude scenes with her because 500.000 people, here in France,
will come and see the film especially for this scene. ;-)
Sad?!!! It was dismal! And there was nothing *sensual* about the picture that
any other film couldn't achieve when the two main characters are naked and/or
bonking for so much of the time - sensual? That's plain, unconditional,
unambiguous pornography. A waste of 2 3/4 hours.
I did like the theme tune though.

The woman who was in "Breathless" with Richard Gere, Valerie Kaprisky, was
in a 10ish minute full-frontal nude scene in a film I saw on German
satellite TV the other day. She was playing a girl who modelled for a
photographer. Sorry, don't recall the title.
Helen Mirren is full-frontal nude for quite a long time in Ken Russell's
"Savage Messiah".

Don't know about the time, but the best acting done naked was, in
my opinion, by Elizabeth McGovern in "Ragtime".

How about Rae Dawn Chong in "Quest for Fire". As I recall, she was nude
throughout the entire movie.

The guy in JUNGLE HOLOCAUST is nude for at least a half an hour of
the film's running time, and Jessica Harper is topless for about half
an hour in INSERTS.

That would be Mathilde May. "Lifeforce" certainly jet-propelled her movie
career, didn't it?
BTW, a local UHF station actually tried to show "Lifeforce" a while back.
Whoever engineered the film for general broadcast "solved" the problem of
her copious nude scenes by dropping in a "cloud" around her body.

I presume that the actors in many porn films are nude far longer than
any of the scenes mentioned above (I don't believe Chong actually
strutted it for the entire movie - weren't there animal skins and
well-placed branches and leaves in much of it?). That seemed to me
like the obvious answer to this pretty dumb question when it first
appeared, but no-one has mentioned it so far. Are porn films just
not "real movies"? Or did you mean "the longest continuous
quasi-sexual scene that only approximates actual sex"?
In keeping with the theme of "the longest continuous behavior which
only mimics its actual purpose even though there are many real
examples to be found", I'd like to make the following nominations:
Ronald Reagan for the Longest Continuous Presidency;
Frank Sinatra for the Longest Continuous Singing Career;
Forest Gump for the Longest Continuous Movie.

For me, the winner of this contest is a strange film adoptation
of the play The Women of James Joyce, with all the female parts
played by the same actress.

I wouldn't say she "strutted it". She played the aborigine so convincingly
that I completely forgot she was an actress and didn't see anything "naughty"
about her nudity. She wasn't naked to be alluring, but simply because it
was a reasonable aspect of her character.
As to "well placed branches", it's been awhile, but I believe her only
clothing was some designs in body paint or dye of some kind. But I can't
be 100% sure, as after the first several scenes I stopped thinking about what
she was or wasn't wearing.
That reminds me, I think it's time to rent Quest for Fire.

I didn't get in on the beginning of this conversation, but I think the
real question was "longest total nude scene". I don't think many sex
film would compete, as they always seem to be putting their clothes
back on at some point to try to fake a plot.
I think we're taking nudity here, not sex or simulated sex. (Although
we could talk about simulated nudity...)
