Considering he is up there with Stephen King and the like, you
would think some movies would have been made.

Unfortunately he hasn't received the kind of support King has from
Hollywood. A couple of his books have been made into movies, but more or
less B pictures--kind of stuff you see on Cinemax at 3 a.m. They usually
have his name in the title, like "Dean Koontz's Servants of Twilight."
That's one. The one with the dog and the monster (can't remember the title--
it's 3 a.m. and his titles are never descriptive) was made twice.

"Strangers" was made into a movie, but if I recall, they screwed it up
pretty badly. They made the kid the main character, they changed the plot
drastically, and I think it starred one of those teen actors named Corey
( I never can keep them straight :-> ).
I think they should make "Phantoms" into a movie; the computerized
morphing effects available now would suit the beast in that novel
perfectly. "Lightning" is another novel I think could be translated to
the screen well if they decide to do it right. Actually, I _AM_ surprised
that more Koontz novels haven't been translated to the big screen since
they have many cinematic elements.

Unfortunately, yes. Dean R. Koontz is my favourite author and I just hat
to see them ruin his work. I am referring to Watchers (a great book)
where they got Corey Haim to play Travis, and totally changed
everything--so far there have been 2 sequels, both equally bad. Dean R.
Koontz also did the novelization for The Funhouse, an early 80s film
which is also pretty bad--but this is not his fault--the book came after
the movie.
By far the best was the t.v adaptation of (oh god, I forgot the
title--it's the one where the ex-mountain climber is stalked by a
psycho-path and has to climb a 40 story building. Face of Fear! That's
it. Anyway it was pretty good, but that's because Dean did the
teleplay. So far that's it. I hear the rights to several books have been
bought by major studios but nothing's come of them.
oops I goofed; I should have said "Watchers" intead (I keep on getting
these one word titles confused :)

Well, there were those two godawful adaptations of Watchers in the 80's.
I think there was also a movie called DemonSeed in the late 70's adapted
from a book under one of his pseudonyms. Didn't see that one, though.
And I just read in Fangoria magazine that a movie version of Hideaway
is coming to theaters in spring of '95.
I disagree. The movie _Watchers_ (the one with Corey whoever)
was awful. The second one, _Watchers 2_, was not a sequel but
rather a remake. It was a LOT more faithful to the book and was
actually an entertaining movie. If you haven't seen it, rent it
and give it a chance.

I never give them hell. I just tell the truth and they think it's
hell.
Not according to the preface in the re-release of The Funhouse. Koontz said
that the book was a top seller until the movie came out after which the
book sales plummeted. He also said he was disappointed in what they
choose to emphasize in the movie (the teens instead of the young boy and
the carnival).

So we have the following so far:
Face of Fear (I believe that one starred Lee Horsley)
Funhouse, The (I didn't know about that one)
Servants of Twilight
Watchers (and II and III)
Any others?

Face of Fear was a TV movie: Lee Horsley and Pam Dawber.
The novelization of The Funhouse was originally published under a pen name--
long before Koontz was famous.
Watchers II intrigued me because it was not a sequel but a remake, closer to
the book than I.
Watchers III?

Some of his books have been made into made-for-tv movies (The face of
fear, etc.), but they are really bad, I'd just stick with the books.

Koontz did write a book called "Whispers," but if there was a movie by that
name it wasn't the same story.
Anyway I recall seeing it several years ago.

Whispers is a Koontz movie. Probably under the suspense section of
your local Blockbuster. Save yourself the agony and don't rent
it...it is sooooo bad...course, only my opinion.
I have read the book, but I haven't heard anything about the movie. Is
it old; is it on video now. Fill me in, please.
