We're thinking of buying a used Aaton LTR.
Can anyone offer some learned advice regarding realibility, problems etc.
and perhaps comparisons with the XTR.
Thanks

I've had an LTR-7 for a little over three years and have never had a
problem with it. I would stay away from the very early ones (serial # < 600
or so) as they supposedly have some problems. Just make sure it's in good
shape -- I would have it evaluated by one of the Aaton dealers first, if
it's possible (I don't know where you are -- there are only three Aaton
dealers in the world: one here in New York, one in LA, and one in France: I
highly recommend Abel Cine Tech here in New York -- they have been really
helpful to me).

In terms of differences w/ XTR, LTR-7 goes only to 36 fps or so, LTR-54
goes to 54 fps, and the various XTR models will go at least to 76 fps. They
are all based on the same basic design, but as you progress the electronics
and motors get more sophisticated. The higher end XTRs can do time code and
have some cool features like a digital readout that tells you camera speed,
footage, frame-lines that light up in the view finder, etc. All the Aatons
are very quiet (although there is some variation, particularly in the older
LTRs.) For me the LTR does everything I need a camera to do, and does it
very well and quietly. Some day I wouldn't mind having an XTR, but it's a
lot more $$$.

Also-- if you care about super-16-- the XTRs can all do s-16, the LTRs can
all be converted to do it. If you know you want it, try to get one that's
already converted -- it'll probably be cheaper than paying for the
conversion yourself.

Hope this info is helpful.

I don't think that ICE would be very happy with that post
:-)

They are of course the Aaton dealers in England.

Also it's really only pre 300 you need to worry about.

I have a very pretty, very quiet, late (high serial number, 9xx) LTR 7 in
stock. WIth 2 mags and a 9.5-57, $15,995.
Really clean, regularly maintained by Abel and Aaton des Autres.

My XTR only goes up to 54 fps, btw. But what a camera, what a finder! So
quiet!
