Hi guys I just read the specs on these today and was pretty impressed
with them Has anyone used them? I already have a sanken CS-1 and CS-3e
but was looking for a decent back up microphone and one that i won't
mind putting in more dangerous or exposed situations. Any thought?
thanks

I am using the NTG-1 for my HDV cameras (sony.com/hdv HVR-Z1U) and I am
very happy with it.

I've been using an NTG-1 for about 8 months now and I'm more than happy with
it.
It's been used on 4 Major network docos, 2 reality series, many day jobs,
and often it compliments on the sound.
all that have heard it are impressed, many so much that they've gone out and
got one, (or 2), for themselves.

Martin,
So what does it sound like tonally.. ie: like a sanken, mkh60 , 416 ,
mkr81i and also background noise rejection , off axis response is it a
sharp cut off or smooth like the 81i?
Just interested as the price seems very good, a bit too good.
GF.

I don't feel it sounds like either the 416 or the mkh60, which to me, is a
plus, as I dislike both of those mics.
From what I've heard of the CS1, (only a little), it compares, (to me).
My "Older trusty workhorse mic" was a Beyer MC 736 which I used constantly
for almost 20 years, mainly because I loved the warmth of the sound.
To me, the NTG-1 compares favourably.
Its noise rejection is good and off axis response is a little more forgiving
than the Senns.
I always thought my MC736 sounded extremely similar to the 81, so I think
we're talking the same language.
I think you'll be impressed with the Rode....don't let the price fool you.

Hi,

I've had the NTG-2 for a month or so. I also like it quite allot. It's very
solidly built, has some weight to it, has a good sturdy body, the AA
battery compartment isn't too tight so you can get the battery in and out
comfortably...all in all nicely crafted. Sonically, it also reminds me of
the CS1, especially when you use the low cut on the NTG-2. Ty Ford had a
nice audio file comparison of the NTG and a Sennheiser 416 posted awhile
back. If I recall, I think the NTG needed to be cranked up slightly
level-wise to equate to the 416.

I just used the NTG-2 today on an acoustic guitar and it was bright and
"sparkly"...sounded good; smooth not harsh and edgy. I used the NTG on a
male voiceover and it was deep, rich and 416ish.
For just over $300 Canadian, I'm going to get great use of the Rode in all
kinds of situations.
I just received Trew Audio's e-flyer regarding the Rode series...I gather
there's a Rycote that will fit the Rodes?
In my opinion you can't go wrong with the NTG's...I agree that you may be
pleasantly surprised

Best regards,

Dave

Rode took a close listen to the CS3 as they were developing the NTG-1 and
NTG-2 (both pretty much the same but for the battery compartment.)

I do have samples in the online archive on my site.

Thank you guys. I ordered one today I will be using it on thursday and
will report my findings on it. I got it from BH Video for 229.00
including 2day shipping a xlr jumper cable and a camera shoe mount. Not
a bad deal if anyone is looking to buy one. There is a ebay store that
has them for 200.00 but shipping is about 15.00 with none of the BH
extras.

I listened to the samples on ty's website of the NTG-1 and 2 vs. the
416. It seems like there is a bigger difference between the NTG 2 and
the 416 than between the NTG 1 and the 416, maybe I'm crazy.

I'm going to rural Africa for 2 months and need a solid, reliable, good
quality sound solution. I'm a bit of a newbie to this, and will most
likely be by myself taking care of video (panasonic DVX 100b) and sound
by myself all at once, with the microphones most likely plugged
directly into the XLR inputs on the camera. Setting price aside, are
there any advantages to purchasing the Rode over the Sennheiser 416?
Thanks for any insight.

I have had my Rode NTG1 now for about 10 days I have used it twice once
inside to boom a standard SRS in a average carpeted room and I was
blown away by how well it performed . I still love my CS-1 but it
performed excellant. The 2nd situation was outdoors in mild wind in a
medium shot it performed great wind wasnt an issue. I ordered a Ryvote
Softee for it though which i will be tryout out next week I will post
my results
