Hey all:

This may not be the right group for this, but I have a question a present
for my little brother. He is 18 and is entranced with movies, TV, and
anything Entertainment Tonight related. He is unbelievably talented with
it.
So my question is, for Christmas can I get him a class somewhere for movie
or TV production. Something that might light a fire under his butt to
pursue
that as a career. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, David

Depends on where you are- if you are in LA, NY, or probably Chicago
there are lots of possibilities. Major Universities with film schools
will offer intensive summer courses in various aspects of production,
and there are a number of technical schools that promise to take you
through the process in a month or two.
Check your local independant newsweeklies for ads for this type of
thing.

If you are not in a major metropolitan area then a DVD player and a
selection of movies with director's commentaries and
behind-the-scenes material can teach you a great deal.

Dear David,

Before starting him off on a class, I suggest buying the 3 CD
self-teaching set known as "How to Make Your Movie, an Interactive Flm
School" which can be purchased for around $130 and is produced by Ohio
University, Electronic Vision, and the Kodak Worldwide Student
Program. I can even sell you an unused version for $65 if you want,
but in any case it is a good starting point. Otherwise there are some
great workshops around the country to send him to, but many are held
only during the summer. Among the better ones are
The Film Workshops in Maine - www.theworkshops.com
The New York Film Academy in NY, Orlando, LA, London and Paris
and others....

Or for $500 you can get him a digital video camera and some video editing
software. But beware, having a close relative who is into filmmaking is
like having friends who move every few weeks and you're the one with the
mini van.
