Is there a particular online retailer that any of you can recommend to
buy these (plus a charger) from?
I probably will start out with 8 to 10 batts and see if my needs grow
from there.
Thanks,

This is where I bought mine;

Good service. I returned one item with no problems.
I know from RAMPS threads that there are still some problems with the
500mAh. I've had 8 for a year with no problems. Kinda makes up for the
8-400's that died within a few months, probably due in large part to
my lack of knowledge of lithium chemistry. So far, the "little
discharge, little recharge" approach has worked well for me.

Unfortunately, Thomas, when last I checked still does not have nor even know
about the newer 550 ipower batts.
I also found this:
http://www.markertek.com/Product.asp?cat=POWER&subcat=BATTERIES&prodClass=BATTPACK&search=0&off=0&baseItem=IP-COMBO
That was a killer deal on ebay. I'm purchased mine from trewaudio.com
and have had good luck.
