thanks for helping
Do you mean DVDRAM (like SD's XLDVDRAM drive) or a solid state ext
drive
(like a CF card or etc.)?

If you are using the 744T, you will also need a FW filter.

Is that powered by the 744T??? Will it also work for the 702T??? It
looks like a great backup solution to the CF on my 702T while i have
it in a bag. Has anybody tested this? Thanks.

Not maybe not--for sure not on spinning DVDRAM in a bag. Tried it a
few times--
really didn't work and the drive hated being in any position other
than flat and
didn't do well with any movement while burning (which in the SD "burn
as you go"
mode is all the time). For bag work w/ SD recorders, record to HD or
card, burn later.

Hi Douglas,
Based on my experience, the firewire filter is only needed if
recording real-time (during the actual take) to the DVD-RAM... If
you're just copying/backing-up the internal HD after shooting, then
the filter isn't required. Have you found this not to be the case?
(Just thinking that if soundtac is only backing up after the shoot,
then he can save his money & not buy the filter...)
Cheers,
Jason

If your 702T has 2.01 firmware or higher, and that the hardware is
'v2.0 ready', yes, the XL-DVDRAM drive WILL work with 702T. Check out
the drive's manual:
http://www.sounddevices.com/download/guides/xldvdram.pdf
A point to anyone, however, who's considering buying the XL-DVDRAM
primarily for post-shoot backup of the 7-series' internal HD (rather
than real-time direct-to-disc recording): It works, but it's
PAINNNNFULLY slow. So slow, in fact, that if the client is on set &
waiting to take data away at the end of the day, it's quicker/easier
dragging along my Mac Powerbook, hooking up the 744T via firewire, &
burning using the Mac's built-in superdrive with regular DVD-R discs.
Best,
Jason

I was referring to this device. I dont think it has any spinning
parts, and it looks small enough for bag use.
Don't see why it would not work.
Seems like an awfully expensive solution considering 1394 CF card
readers are available for ~$60.

That's awfully pricy storage for after the fact transfer and a sizeable
dongle that would be difficult to protect in a bag for running around.

Would a 1394 card reader do the same thing? If i were to just get one
of those and hook up a CF card would that do the same thing, have you
tested this with the Sound Devices line? I was also looking at
setting up a solid state hard drive for the same use. Has anybody
tried something like this?
I have used the Sandisk Extreme 1394 CF Reader with both the 744T and
the 788T with no problems.
I would _guess_ the enclosure + SSD would work. I have a plain vanilla
enclosure with a 40gig Samsung PATA drive mounted. It works just fine
as long as you have external power available. I don't see why the
enclosure with an SSD mounted would be any different.

With the card reader and a CF card, do you still need the firewire
filter in line as you would with a hard drive? Would the reader need
power or is it powered by the Sound Devices recorder? Does the CF
card just show up as the Ext. hard drive on the 702T? I never even
thought of using a firewire card reader as the 2nd type of media for
the 702T. Thanks for saving my some money with what i believe is an
even better solution.
1 - No, no moving parts to create the noise
2 - Yes, the 7 Series will power the 1394 reader just fine. If you are
using only the onboard cell, there will obviously be a little extra draw
on the cell, so you will probably see a reduction in your run-time.
3 - Yes, the reader/CF will just show up as the external device.

Thats awesome, i am ordering one tonight. I remember reading in the
manual that a firewire device can only be powered using bus power if
the 702T is plugged in using DC power. This is great, thanks for the
information.
DVD-RAM it's very slow because is constantly checking for error (wich
makes it the safest optical media btoh). Plus it needs to be steady
and drags lots of power. Not "field friendly" imho.
I use a different recorder, but DVD-RAM it's always painfully slow in
any application.
I now avoid all I can burning DVDs and use a SanDisk CF drive.
The only problem is that some productions will ask for a DVD (mainly
if they sync at telecine using a Fostex, wich happily is not so usual
in my country)
So I try always to use CF and turn two or three for daylies.
I don't understand why you want to record to a third media in real
time though. You already have a CF slot in your recorder...
