Why my new Scheopes sounds better than the rentals?

I have been renting various mics to find one to buy and after renting
several the Scheops (several times), MHK50, MHK60, etc I decided the
scheops did in fact sound the best.

So I get my new Scheops with MK41 cap, Cut 1, GVC, etc and I used it on
a few shoots this week. I can say without a doubt that is sounds a
little better than the same exact setups that I rented. In fact it
sounds amazing.

So what is the main factor in degrading the quality of the Scheops over
time? Do you pros send yours in for a "tune up" from time to time?

My latest experience;

Schoeps starts motorboating as badly as I have ever heard motorboating.
I throw it on a shelf and leave it there for a year. Pull it out a
week ago ready to change electrolytics, find a big gob of crap on one of
the amplifier contacts that connects to the capule, shifted it with a
tooth pick. The motor boat sank. ;-)

With passing of the years, the dust, that contains particle of iron,
accumulates in the membrane, deteriorating the freq response of the
mic.

Where are you that there is iron dust in the air?

I think it has something to do with the main module. Even with a
rented MK4 cap my new mic sounds better than a rented main modeule with
a MK4.

Of course I am using the MK41 for most things but was happy to hear the
MK4 sounded great as well.

I think you are on the right track as ferrrous particles as well as
those with an opposite static polarity will be attracted to the filter
membrane. I try to keep all my mics bagged when not working as it is
my understanding that they will attract microscopic dirt particles even
when not powered. I also use a product. De-Ox it, mfg by Caig on all
mating connections exept the Scheops. Anyone using any kind of cleaner
there???

Thanx,
Jeff

I wonder if it has more to do with your ears spending more time with the
Schoeps, now that you own it, and liking it more as you listen? I have heard
that oil-based smoke FX are not great for the diaphragms, and dust will collect
over time too, so maybe the rental was a little dirty? I have sent my capsules
on expensive German vacations from time to time [every decade or so...]

I only used my Scheopes on one shoot before I realized how much better
it sounded than the rentals. So I have actually spent much more time
listening to the rental mics than the one I own. I swear, there
really is a difference. I am extremely happy because I never
dreamed I could get such great sound. Completely blows away the other
mics IMHO - (for interiors). Nothing else sounds so "natural".

Schoeps worked very well mainly when you have several actors
speaking and no that to use more than a boom.

An old radio engineer once told me that for Neumann large diaphrams they
take a very fine makeup brush and wash the capsule down in alcohol.

I've been tempted to try it on a Schoeps but have never had enough beer
in me.

Newer amplifier bodies have vastly improved RF rejection -- is it
possible you were getting some demodulated RF noise at a low level that
muddied up the sound?
