I'm courting a wonderful location, wonderful in all aspects except the
acoustics. Wooden floors throughout, even the bedrooms, like in Panic Room.
Will this be a nightmare? Would I have a much easier time in a carpetted
house?

You bring runners of carpet and some double-stick tape or just pad the
bottom of actor's shoes with moleskin products. Just tell the
producers what you expect to happen and how to fix it.

On the other hand you can just live with it-a recent import by Jaques
Rivette was shot on location around Paris (I think) and was nothing
but squeaking doors and footsteps on old wooden floors. It's just the
nature of the spaces.

I have found that ambiance is very important to the shot. Sometimes it is okay
to have the noise. The mole skin is a great idea. And the carpet is okay. The
problem with that is, close up shots will be great. But then when you go to a
wide and director wants to see the floor it won't match.
You want to keep things consistent.
They can lay in the sound of the shoes in the close up to match the wide shot.
I think it is natural sound with all the creaks and traffic noise as long as it
doesn't interfere with the dialog.
Just my opinion from my own experience.

Having all wood floors would surely raise the ambiance level, but this is not
necessarily a bad thing. A bad thing would be reflections from the dialog at the
mic's position. Careful placement of the mic as well as acoustic controls -
off-camera carpet, blankets, furniture, etc. could help you out a lot.

Your worst problem will be dolly creaks and crew noise. The wood floors
will give the sound a very live ambience which in itself is not bad. The
problem is when the actors are standing still and the camera is moving. A
good grip crew can be a great help in doing quiet dolly moves. You'll also
need the cooperation of the camera operator, focus puller, stills person,
and perhaps a grip or 2 flying flags and maybe even an electric walking with
a China Ball on a fish pole to move as quietly as possible and then some.

If you get along with the camera dept. and others you could get them all to
take off their shoes.
I have boomed a few times in my socks. Hey, at least they can't say it was the
boom op making the noise.

Hey Jim,

I know what you mean. It is VERY quiet here. Just keeping myself busy with the
new house, and lots of yard work. You'd think things would start to pick up
soon? Who knows??

Same here, well for me anyway, meanwhile I'm adapting an old Micron wireless
to handle T/C to a slate. A few day calls, very few, and that's it.

BTW saw a good idea that I'm copying off another mixer. Build your Comtek/
Wireless links into a Pelican 1120 cases. You mount a XLR in the side for
audio in, and a BNC or UHF into the top. Great protection for the
transmitter and semi waterproof, hanging a Comtek on a clip and wrapping it
in a plastic bag always seemed dangerous to me . I don't mind if the grips
kick it anymore.

William is wright about that.

6 years ago,the last scene of one french film, was a plan sequence of
3 minutes, in one location similar to Michael's one, with an old wood
floor.
A long dolly.

The problem in old wood floors ( i don't know if it's your case) is
the "movement" of the wood itself receiving the weight.

The best solution i found for the "dolly man" was a piece of wood of 3
cmX 50 cm and the same lenght of the dolly, covered by carpets, he
walked over this "freeway", the weight of the dolly man was
distributed.........

The focus puller was in the dolly so no problem with him.

It was one of the most beautiful plan sequence i never had.

A lot of soft furniture, plus the crew helps me about reverberations.

If you work in an old wood floor, good luck with your AD.

All the best, and sorry for my english....

Of course a carpeted house is easier, but I kinda doubt you have a choice
between a carpeted house and a non-carpeted house, both of which the director,
DP, and production designer love equally, that locations can get everyone in
and out of, blah blah blah -- filmmaking is a team sport, and the pros and cons
of everybody's issues are going to be taken into account.

If you have to make the current ones work, wooden floors aren't necessarily so
bad. Creaking issues will depend on the condition of the wood, both decorative
planks and support beams underneath. If there are old and rotting boards
somewhere in the structure, you're going to get creaks. This means a lot of
playing policeman and making sure no one moves while you're rolling -- not too
much fun. You'll need a lot of support from your AD to make this happen. (I
never understand why people feel the need to pace around during shots, or take
slow baby steps toward the workstation they will be using after someone calls
"CUT" -- wouldn't they accomplish the same goal of reaching their destination
in two seconds after we stop rolling? Are they really making the process that
much more efficient by taking two or three steps toward their carts? -- but
they almost always do, job in and job out), and it'll be a bit aggravating for
both you and them to keep them still.

On the shots where people must move -- handheld and dolly shots -- it gets a
bit more complicated. The grip department can help you out a lot by placing
dancefloor -- a large piece of plywood -- underneath the dolly track. This
distributes the weight of the dolly and reduces creaking considerably. Of
course, this means they have to haul a large piece of wood onto the set and lay
it down first, requiring muscle and time, so it pays to be nice, and let them
know your needs as far in advance so they have the necessary equipment ready
and nearby, and can adjust their ETAs for the ADs appropriately. Dollies and
handheld shots of actors sitting are particularly problematic for creaks, for
if the actors on screen are not moving, the audience is going to start
wondering where all that creaking is coming from. In theory a shot of actors
walking might motivate some creaks, allowing sound design to sort of fudge it,
but sitting or standing still there's nowhere to go. I don't know how easy it
is to remove them with filtering, EQ, or some other tool -- perhaps someone
else can give some insight on this?

If the wood is particularly reflective, you can either go with the flow or
fight it with furney pads, carpets, etc. If you're not using a lot of light
the DP may be fussy about the color of the furneys, so it never hurts to ask
before you lay them down. Obviously, if you try to dry everything out yourself
with blankets on the floors and walls, you'll get away with it in coverage but
get boned in the wide shots, creating a potential situation for post where they
must add reverb to the closeups to make them match better. (It might still be
more optimal for the end product to do this, but in the end it's sort of an
aesthetic issue). Reflective floors also create a much bigger challenge for
the boom operator -- hitting the sweet spot is much more critical, or heavy
reflections may cause your track to sound much more off-axis than it actually
is.

For footsteps, you'll need all the usual tools, eg foot foam, rug runners,
sound blankets, and so forth.

Best of luck -- hope that's helpful!

Nobody seems to have mentioned this yet. It isn't always the most politically correct
cure, but when it has been approved by location dept., etc. it often helps those
creaky floors. Water applied in the noisiest places (where we can determine the
location of a serious creak) sometimes works wonders. If it is an historical property
or such, it may not be an option, but sometimes when authorized, it works. I once
worked with a dolly grip who would pull out the evian bottle right away, and often
very effectively. Yes, I agree the worst floor noises are when there is no picture
motivation for them. That is when stronger actions must be considered (responsibly,
of course).

This reminds me of a commercial I worked on in a stage with a painted
concrete floor. The wheels on the Condor crane were squeaking loud
enough that it even drove the DP to distraction. "I'm sorry, we can't
have this", he said, "I just can't concentrate on the move with this
noise" (as my eyes rolled).

So, the crew went to work with the usual barely effective treatments:
Baby powder, WD-40, more baby powder... Then, one of the grips slipped
on a pool of WD-40 while carrying his coffee, and spilled the entire cup
right in front of the crane's wheels. The gaffer said, "Uhmm, I guess
it's worth a try". So they rolled the crane over the coffee spill and,
viola! No squeak.

After a couple seasons of pulling my hair out because all of the girls on my
show insisted on wearing heels and boots and most of my main sets had wood
or concrete floors, I finally discovered a foam heel material that can be
permanently installed on the bottom of shoes and lasts for a couple of
months. It's about 1/4" thick. It's not as hard and noisy as Dance Rubber,
and not as soft as, and doesn't disenegrate easy like Foot Foam. I don't
know the name, but costumers seem to know where to find it. Of course, you
need to plan this with wardrobe ahead of time, which isn't always possible,
but if you do have that luxury, it's a good way to eliminate alot of the
noise from these floors. Sorry can't help with the crew noise. I can't even
get my camera/grip guys to wear booties in these situations.

If you or anyone else finds out the name, please share! It would be a
marvelous thing to tag wardrobe's whole collection of BG shoes at the beginning
of the show and just be done with it.

Don't know if this is relevant, but I have found that neoprene foam works quite
well for killing sound. It is available in huge sheets from McMaster -Carr and
can be contact cemented to just about anything.

A 6 foot by four foot sheet of 1/8 inchfoam is about $20. The stuff is availble
in differing hardness levels.

1st point..
No not really, but I know what you mean.
Its more to do with your shoe sole material, which makes the noise.
In bare feet bugger all, nothing.
Even with a hard sole quieter than concrete, or varnished floor.
depending on your foot strike pattern..Some people just walk quilter
than others.
When you see how some women fly up and down corridors, they sound like
an amy band, banging away on their heels. but yer the stiff leg
walking pattern, inflexible ankle, locked knee..bang bang..but I think
they like that sound, and no matter what you do, they want to punch
through it.
And as everybody know it makes a neat drum..when still a box..
but not when its flat.

But yer I walk quietly.
Once you sort of jumped, flattened it a bit..But I know the boxes to
grab..I just use the thin boxes, cigarettes come in..when opened up
that are about 6ft long..from the supermarkets..but yer there are
different grades.but once flattened out..they are not bad, a bit of
tape on the ends so you don't kick them up..save the floors, all that
bloody varnish.
And easy to get/use temporary building/protection, material..with a
staple gun, pin, tape whatever.. easy stuff to grab.
Cover lights, windows..( oh yer I know it can catch on fire)
Wizzo stuff.

So positive.non-argumentive.
.Just thick enough to absorb impact..save scratches.
compresses right down when walked on, or wheeled, takes a shape..needs
easy tools to utilize, sound/energy absorbing, and cost nothing,
The rest is called experiment.( its always wise to experiment with
crap stuff..than expensive, and then find it doesn't work)
So for 1st choice,..? Its not that stupid..and you still got plan B.
Bare feet.
But if your not happy with my cheap micky mouse answer..
Which is more fun.

For a slightly higher fee.
I can give you my wizzo, scientific engineering answer.
As every scientist knows..problem solving in the real world..
is a formula based on variables and constants..So every
situation..you examine what are the constants.
Then you work on the variables..and try to make them constants too,
that way you can narrow your point of focus.

As the building material is a constant..so you look at all the
people..and examine..shoe material, walking style..and try to define
that as a constant..so you have uniformity..then you can look at other
points in the equasion..and narrow it down further..otherwise you are
all over the place, chasing variables that loop themselves.

So do I have to pull out my books my biomechanics, and acoustics, etc.
Carnt it be figured out..?

You got a human element..that is the problem..
No matter what you do..
Every engineer pulls his hair, out trying to make every toy idiot
proof. So we are now into the area of psychology..as its not reality..
So your answer lies in modifying human behavior.

And we now come back to robots..my engineering specialty.
And to program the reflex mind of the ameba mind ( the least level of
intelligence) you use punishment and reward..as its just a reflex..and
any reflex is programmable. Sit in church one day and watch.
These are your compliant, dependent.
So give them a bar of chocolate if they walk quietly.
And yell at them if they dont.

But for the intelligent ones, get a consensus..involve them..ask them
to solve the problem. These are your least programmable, and most
argumentative, free agents, leader.Independent type.

Also if people are not walking quietly, they are in bio-mechanical
terms injuring themselves.subjecting knee joints to stress, and not
allowing the arse and thigh musles to absorb the shock, it should be a
controlled steady foot strike..where the musles absorb the shock
factor, not the floor..So we have speed, weight, foot pounds in old
terms..and not very efficient..so they need some video on them..and
someone who understands these principles, of efficience, and more
important self damage..

And the point to the solution seem to be loaded more in favor of
behavior analysis. So I may as well finish it off.

A simple practical solution.?
Or have you got some moving variables,,?
Have you got a few problems, and this factor is just the indicator?
A management problem, communication problem, or is the floor just it.?
If you put packing on their shoes, will they bang down louder..
to compensate,?
Do they like the noise,,?

You all got to sit down and talk.
As an engineer give everything a number..to make it measurable.
then, you got a figure to work with..if you don't your back to square
1..and its abitary..so the number has to be a consensus number,
that X = equals the figure you want..and they can see what this
number is, and Y= the figure you now have.
But according to psychology..expect about 85%

Noise to me in psychology, in girls means several emotional factors..
And in the mind games, goals, challenges, teasing, humor, creating
interest, moving boundries..when I trained dogs, I made it fun, and
added variation, lots of variation..to add stimulation to the
challenges, they did pretty much as I wanted, as long as they were
interested in that project too..So yer apart from choosing the right
dog, and finding a dog with a brain, that was the first test.
I set up a day care with kids, and taught the ladies some of the same
stuff..some of it so simple and silly..but it works..find the child
inside, and develop on the wonder of self discovery.
Control dosent work.as your going to have to be there day in day out.
So its part motivation, part enthusiasm, part appreciation.
Intelligence, is really about adapting to an environment..
Make the environment interesting..and you have a better level of
intelligence...so here is your first key..
If a dog looks bored, change the training, or change the situation.
then you get its attention again...it switches back on..

But the mechanics is my main area of interest.
Noise to me as an engineer, draws my attention, as something
automatically out of alignment, and I look at the cogs, cams, in this
case the body, it irates me..and I have to sort it out..as an
engineer. And yer..I pull lots of folk apart..as im walking down the
street giving them time frames to when it all falls apart on them.
If they don't work on this muscle, or square out the load, stop
rolling this ankle etc..

To pull up the mind
So you got any children, they can bring down..
a few baby toys around the place, but a cot in the middle of the floor
you don't leave it there..just leave it as a mental imprint.
Sometimes they need a mother figure, who can play games on their mind
and pull them up, with sincerity, some kind of a grandmother figure.
girls belong to a community type world.
Something that remind them, about rational maturity.
a balance between healthy fun and healthy work..

So the noise factor is part of their entrance..the more flamboyant
should prove this mental equation. So if you deal, with these
extravert attention seeking girls a lot, you got this problem.
Strutting their stuff.
In competition with other girls.

While the introvert mouse girl..well she will be quiet.
As will the ballet girl, like the control discipline situation

Now this is also a cultural thing..as in some cultures, girls are more
subdued, and "disciplined" so it is a programmable behavior.
But programmability is usually pre-puberty, once they past that..it
hard work to change them..So you need to find some other factor in
their pre-puberty environment

These girls seem quite free spirited, and not easy to control, even
though emotionally immature, they are happy to explore.

But I don't know your real problem..I only trained aerobics
instructors, in specialized, injury rehab, and weight trainers etc.
And designed specialized exercise gear.
And I know the crap a lot of people pass off as exercise, and I can
tell a crap dancer, aerobics instructor etc..and how they cheat, but
it catches up on them eventually..and if you got silly girls, and not
walking correctly, gracefully they are going to get injuries...as
strength is graceful.
and idiots do the ballistic thing, throwing themselves around. so who
is training these girls..?
I would look there..as well
Bad posture, weak girdle muscles, and no kink in the legs, no thigh
muscles..just stiff..all bad stuff..just amateurs..thats is what all
the noise tells me..no shock absorber in their thigh muscle.

Changing their training.
So how about changing their training..the reason I say this is.
as an engineer, and they are banging down on the floor..
it indicates several muscular deviances.
and a body type high on ballistic energy, not strength..
Ballistic energy is self destructive, where a body winds up speed,
like a whip, not a slow controlled muscular movement.
It also denotes, a flat foot, more used to walking on flat paths, with
no ankle strength. A body with little flexibility, other than the
usual high kicks..and a stiff knee, flick, heel bang walk

A change of pace in your music..put some slow stuff in it..
that makes them hold something for awhile till their muscles scream.
Make them do things at half speed.
Technique is always taught at low speed..only later when the body
strength is built up, do you increase speed, so many sports injuries.

Also running/ walking on the hills..gives more flexibility to the
ankle.and side role..to the ankle, nice muscle calf line, not stiff
legged.

Rollerblading, gives you better weight, posture, sence..of balance,
and smother flowing style, more elegance..to the carriage, less back
lean.
Its develops the senses in the ear, and develops the inner thigh
muscle, for better control..so maybe your girls not getting enough
variation in trainning.to keep them mentally alert, getting into bad
habits, maybe they are bored.

Can you get the girls to go for a few lessons on skating lessons.
( open their brain up ) that you can come back on later.
So yer..some brain gym, coordination stuff..fleaxability..
And they should walk with a better carriage, get some gymnast to give
them the once over.

So maybe 30% training, 30% psychology..30% managment.10% floor.
I don't know but engineers use percentages and maths to build a
picture of the problem to nail it.

But something to think about.
As from a point..of biomechanics, the thing is not balanced.
if its banging..
As in psychology..again if its not balanced, its banging.
not stable.
But I think thats about it..for free that is.
As without, controls, measurements, comparasons..who knows.

Well Thank you for your observations.
And as you have so willingly offered.
I was in need of such as your obviously flashing mental skills to test
pilot my latest kite.

So in your special honour I shall call it the "Nut Bar theory on Kite
Flying".

Now the controls are quite simple, we have over here the REFLEX
handle.
This is your basic self preservation controls it can only go backwards
and forwards.
So don't try anything too fantastic, it could throw you out if you try
to do any gymnastic stuff.
Its what I call the baby mode, just for beginners.
This is just your average suburban shuttle mode.

Now over here is you GENIUS handle, well if I were you I would
definitely leave this one alone.
This is your high speed, somersaults, flips and tumbles, 3
dimensional, it may take a few years..
But it depends on your mental speed, as its a bit more complex, and
you need another type of map.
When you get into this mode, then the sky is the limit.
And you can turn anything on its ear.

Now here is a serious warning button, this red light comes on when you
too near the other kite fliers
still going along in reflex mode, and you are trying out the genius
mode, either you slow down, or make for distance.
And this red light will be on most of the time. So remember genius
mode is distance critical.
As they hate the gymnastic kite flyers. it confuses them, there
reaction time is not built for anything too fast
So they want you to keep your speed down when your near them, or you
feel like playing games to tease.
Now the main playground for genius mode, is in extreme locations,
where the reflex handle doesn't work.
And you need the genius handle to get you out of the shit.
So where crap is, is your flying zone. As only the genius handle can
pull you out of it.
And where they reflex don't want to party, but this is also the zone
of crash landings, so the genius life expectancies is quite low.
So if you want to live forever, stick to the reflex handle.

Now you need to be careful of all rules, especially as they are made
for the reflex handle fliers.
Now warning especially at school, keep in reflex mode at all times, do
not WARNING try the genius handle in a reflex home or attend school,
in genius mode, as you are not going to make it, school and most homes
are only for the reflex handle, but don't worry, once you make
distance, you will catch up in no time, while it takes forever and
then some while in reflex mode, so a couple of weeks in genius mode
and you can do the whole year in reflex, but you need to get down to
the library and find the right manuals.
As you will only get confused if some else tries to read the manuals
to you day in day out, while they themselves are only in reflex mode.
So get yourself a tool box, as you need to start pulling this apart
early in life..and you need tools more than you need to wash behind
your ears.
As the genius handle need tools, lots of them, and books.

But if you only want to do the suburban shuttle thing...stick to your
reflex handle, and wash behind your ears.

Now the reflex handle is for those, who still sing "rule britania" and
"onward christain soldiers" and read newspapers.
And even believe in it.
Now the problem is that if you stay in reflex mode too much, you can
become Pious, Arrogant, as is trusting the reflex to much, so you need
to give the genius handle a burst every now and again, get the
adrenaline going, give yourself a scare, and think shit that was a
close call.
So yer, you got to open it out a bit..explore, other wise you never
know what you talking about, try a new playing field every now and
again.
So yer, the old folk understood, a 40 ft wooden boat, hundreds of
files out to sea with no GPS, Radio, or Life Raft...so its a bit like
that.
So you need to rely on intuition, and figure it out by the stars and
seasons, find the right tides, then you should get home alright.

Now you need genius mode to figure out if your kite is of any use,
especially in an emergency, so you need to test it, and you can only
test any theory in genius mode, as to will it come apart or not..So
staying in reflex mode is not going to test anything, so if you need a
better kite, only the genius mode can help you improve it, and test
its limits, so genius mode is important, but not worth much if you
want to pull apart that reflex handle.
As the reflex handle can get quite warn out and fail, more than any
other component, it can lead to abuse, so be carefull when tampering
with the reflex handle..no matter how worn out it looks and fragile,
in can make for strange behavour if you try to rearange it.

So you ready to go for it, and grab that genius handle.
You got what it takes...well, I think you only going to crash land
myself.
But here you go..The Genius handle. I being a nut bar and all.

So where you want to take this kite, or are you just going to park it
in the back yard.?
Or you really do need me to show you how it works.
This is the problem with the genius mode.
You have to do all the work designing, building, developing, wiping
arse, so the reflex mode type can actually operate it.
The reflex mode types never get to appreciate the real kites ability.
They just want to push the buttons that others have programmed for
them.
And they never get to find out what is under the hood.
So you design these toys, they cant even use, and even with hours
spent trying to instruct them they will still never even find the
genius handle. Yet they want to make all the rules.
So yer..
chris-Copyright.

So yer..I never like to loose the opportunity others being so blind,
not to see what they are or do.
So yes welcome my scrap book of self publishing ideas..another story.
What would I do without your inspiation, for comparason.

Yes, same first name..but nothing else..
As noted I too want no-one to compare me, to your level of
intelligence either.
As I think trivial worthless.
But a common problem in NZ such a small Pious little country, full of
self righteous speeches.
but little else, riding dead horse with antique ideals. Its colonial
programming of social complaints
Selling off the farms its so abused, to prop up the established habits
of its parasitic values.
So all get screwed, but some positions being more comfortable and more
highly desirable.

When the table is full, so you are there, but soon the climate will
set less a table. What then speech man..?
Without genius mode your in the shit.
And having spent so 20 years studying the environment, and plotting
its breakdown, crap farming practices.
so the opportunists came with reflex values, now sit smug, while
sitting on a landslide of their own making.
So no lolly pop for you today.

As you noted..our time frames or different.
What is impossible for you is not for me, so in a few minutes, I can
crack out more originality, more precision
more astuteness, more skill, with more tools, so my time frame is from
a mind light years ahead of your own.
From a real life, while you are still snoring loudly, so why do you
presume all other worship your ideals..?
So yes, you can go back to sleep now.
You were not what I was looking for, I was looking for another
gymnastic type brain.
Not just another Pious pop up, small world presumer, so I must troll
and wade through hundreds of idiots as yourself.
In hope of finding others who prefer to fiddle around with the genius
handle.
As I have some movie projects to discuss with them.
