What headphone is recommended for pro recording?

I use Sennheiser HD25's for location sound work. There excellent at
blocking out external noise, allowing you to focus on what is being
recorded.
Many people also use the Sony 7506's but I prefer the Sennheisers.
There are many many options out there though.

The Sony 7506's are good headphones but I've had a few break on me.
The ones I use now and I love are the Audio Technica M50's. They are
awesome. Very tough, I'm pretty rough when it comes to my
headphones. I've had them for over a year and no problems yet. I
also find them more comfortable then the sony's. Hope this helps.

I'm an Audio Technica M50 convert also. Excellent sound quality, very
good isolation from outside noises and ruggedly built. A bit
expensive, but well worth the money.

Do the ATH M50 have the cables that do not require soldering to
replace? That is in my opinion one of the best qualities of some AT
headphones.

Heya,

I use HD280pro's all the time. I'll be honest, they have some issues
(like a very noise conductive cable), but other than that - I know
their sound well, and with all monitoring systems that are pricey
enough to be made of good components, that pretty much the most
important thing...

Interesting. No they don't. I asked them about that and they said after
looking at the post market sales figures, they didn't sell enough to make it
worthwhile. Actually, I think they said, didn't sell any.

Like a lot of you I used the sony 7506 for a long time,
After starting on a show that involved working at a lot of events
(read "noisy") I found the sonys didn't have enough isolation and grip
due to my smallish head. I've been using the sennheiser hd25 (not
"sp") for 7 years now and am very happy with them , yep they are
expensive but worth it in my opinion. (I've listened to the M50's and
liked them too)
Do you know any retailer that can let you audition the different
headphones? Like a lot of things in the audio world it's a matter of
personal taste.

Just bought some M50's on the basis of feedback on this thread.

I've lived with & enjoyed (for the most part) the 7506's for years
(they're pretty rare here in the UK). As much as I like them though,
I agree on the point of limited isolation. As flattering as they
sound, I also feel they are unnaturally 'toppy' & seem to have a bit
of a hole in the low-mids too (fine for location recording perhaps,
but more of a problem for me in the studio when checking mixes).
Etymotic ER4P's in-ears have always provided a good 'alternative view'
for me.

Anyway, here's hoping the M50s resolve the 7506 'issues' for me. (If
not, there'll be hell to pay.... ;-) )

Best,

Jason

It surprises me how popular the 7506s still are. I used to burn
through 3 pairs of 7506 a year (Circuit City had a great service
contract). Several years ago I worked with a rental package that sent
out Sony MDRV600 which shocked me with their low end response and I
thought I hated them. Oddly enough I had noticed that the off-air
mixes of my TV projects sounded thin and when I heard the broadcast of
the MDRV600 monitored production the off air mix sounded exactly like
I remembered recording it. I used those headphones for a few years.
I purchased MD25 Sennheisers and although they did sound great, I
found that they could become very loud without distortion and fatigued
my ears. The Sony's would distort if pushed too hard and this became
my hearing protection, if the headphones distorted then I knew I was
monitoring too loud! I also liked the isolation of the Sony's and
felt more comfortable. I gave the MD25s to my boom operator.
Well at the AES show 3 years ago I compared all the headphones
(Sennheiser, Sony, Ultrasone, Beyer) and discovered the Sony 7509.
Much flatter response, more industrial strength and I now am addicted
to them. 7509 is my preference.

Hello.

My favourite headphones so far: Beyerdynamic DT 770 M
http://tinyurl.com/coxdlg

Very good isolation, comfortable around the ears, very rugged
construction, sounds good.
What I don't like is the straight and long cable with a volume knob in
it. I just tape the control to max volume and coil the cable to good
length.

M50's arrived.

Very comfortable indeed, isolation's a bit better than the 7506's (but
not by much imho), & on the whole a decent sound...

But, I found they had a pretty unpleasant-sounding peak in the high
mids that sounded like a tight-Q parametric EQ boost, so they've gone
back for a refund. (I appreciate they hadn't been run in, but I've
only ever known cans to get brighter as they run in (the 7506's are a
good example), & they sounded brighter out of the box than the already-
bright 7506's!). In addition, whilst checking them out with a
variable-frequency sine wave (in an attempt to spot peaks & dips), I
noticed upper harmonics being generated whilst listening to certain
mid-band frequencies. The 7506's didn't exhibit this trait at all...

It made me compare all three pairs of my 7506's, & interestingly, the
oldest pair (4 years old perhaps) sound distinctly weaker in the low
to mid range compared to the newest pair.... Anyone else ever noticed
this?

All the best,

Jason

Hey Andy,
A five day gig fell through this weekend in Olathe... other than that
not much going on here. Yes, maybe some Chapala with Negra Modelo & a
tequila chaser would be a good thing. Hopefully we dont get too much

Vin,
you are right put it in the cart and you get them for $170.oo, try the
same in Amazon & you would not be so lucky.

I've been using the HD280's and I'm happy with them, especially for
the price. the isolation they provide means you can keep your volume
lower, which is a Very Good Thing™ to save your ears. they also grab
your head well. the 7506's just fall off, and I find just flimsy. I
have not had any noise problems from the cable.
