Did anyone who had the chance to visit the AES, to know something more from
SD about the official release of the 744T ? On their page in the support
section you can already download firmware version (1.07), Nice but where is
the hardware ??
On TAI audio website their are claiming that shipping will be in November

I did not visit AES, but the dealer with whom I have placed an order mailed
us to say that he spoke to SD at AES. He said a few 744T's would ship this
week, and the first 722's in about a month. I noticed that SD's pictures
page finally has 722 pictures, the internal time stamp says in mid-October,
while the 744T pictures are dated mid-August.

I don't know who'll get them or when, but the unit I saw at AES was a
gorgeous piece of technical sculpture. What a wonderful piece of work, a
recording studio as jewelry. <g>

I am told that the first few production units will arrive at retailers Friday.
I received an email from my SD dealer in Portland today saying this.....
Hello Folks,
I spent some time with the Sound Devices staff at AES this weekend in San
Francisco. The latest update on the 7 Series is Cascade Media will be
shipped a "few" 744ts by the end of this week and they will continue to
arrive over the course of this month. 722s should start to ship in 4 weeks
and we hope to have our entire allotment by the end of the year.
Once again, we SINCERELY appreciate your patience. The wait has been as
difficult on us as it has been on you. There have been many reasons for
the delays over the past few months, most relating to inadequate parts that
had to be rejected and reordered from other vendors. This type of due
diligence has indicated to me that Sound Devices is committed to making
these recorders the best they can be. I deal with many vendors and
manufactures on a regular basis, and everyday I see products where corners
have been cut and sacrifices made to "get the product out the door".
Sound Devices has lots of resources committed to this product line, however
they continue to strive for it to be up to their standard before it ships to
end users. I can tell you that the 744t I have used is an incredible
machine that has gone above my expectations. I believe you will all agree.
Thanks again, we appreciate your business.

An e-mail blast to our "opt-in" web list from October 1 still holds
(largely) true. That message read:
++++++++++++++++++++
...What this means for our customers is that unit availability will be quite
limited until the first of the year. If you have a product need for the fall
season you may want to consider an alternative until 7-Series availability
improves. Neither Sound Devices nor your dealer can guarantee the
availability of a product on a specific date.
722 sales samples and first production are being produced concurrently with
744T and will begin shipping in mid-October...
++++++++++++++++++++
We have just begun shipping production 744Ts. These first few builds have
been intentionally low quantities so we can catch any issues/problems that
may appear before units leave our plant. The amount of data we have
collected and the number of times these first units have gone through
testing is extreme. I trust you appreciate our conservatism. Our products
are typically the centerpiece of someone's entire recording system. They
need meet your and our expectations of excellence.
Availability will greatly improve over the next 60 days. We have enough
units in process to make substantial headway with our existing orders before
the first of the year.
Regarding the 722, we are just as excited about that product as the 744T.
Demand is substantially skewed toward the 744T, and our production mix
reflects those numbers. 722s are about three weeks behind the 744Ts. Do note
that sales samples of 744T recorders are in select dealer/distributor
locations worldwide while samples and production of the 722 are being built
along with production 744Ts.
If you have specific questions about availability, please contact me
off-list at jon_tatooles -at- sounddevices.com. Note that we simply cannot
quote delivery estimates to end customers since we sell through our sales
channel. We are working closely with our dealer and distribution network,
and they are the best source of information on specific product
availability.
Thank you for your patience.

So, am I correct in assuming this would be pretty much used as a backup since
it doesn't have mic inputs? Or am I reading this wrong?
