My experience with digibeta cameras is that the headphone audio sucks.

Last week some folks from Toronto were in town and their digibeta had an very
good headphone feed. Like surprisingly good.

Is there some sort of menu choice for different monitor options; like suck,
not suck?

Actually, I think the switch is 'suck / suck more'... maybe someone
sabotaged the camera and replaced all the sound components with good
ones. Seriously, it's probably a combination of level settings --
there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason with those cameras though
-- exact same audio settings yield different results (often by rather
large margins) especially regarding the headphone outputs.
Eliminating variables usually helps, but as far as camera settings,
the only settings I know of are the mic/line switches, the routing
switches, the (gain) pots, and the headphone output level. If I
remember correctly, there are also some menu driven sound functions
relating to attenuation, and possibly routing, but I don't think any
of those would change the quality or level to your cans without
changing it overall. In any case, it sounds like you had whatever
opportunity you were going to have to investigate. Chalk it up to a
ghost in the machine... (or lack thereof) : )
