autohystoria and old joy

If you mean the Korean flick "Old Boy," I'd agree it's unusual. Damn
good film but a tad long. Been much talk of a remake. Wait, I just
googled "Old Joy." Kelly Reichardt. Funny, I just saw "Wendy and Lucy"
last night. I'll check out "Old Joy." Thanks.

OLD JOY, yes. And I appreciate the mention of a film other than THE
NEW WORLD about which I can say it has to be felt as much as seen...

A What might have been" award:
"Life on Mars"(UK) tv series.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_on_Mars_(TV_series)
On the face of it, an impossible plot, yet brilliantly held
together.
Richly decorated with 1970's references, some inspired not
by reality, but early cop shows.

I feel this could have been translated into a fine film.
The economics now make that impossible since it has been
remade for different audiences.

Stone me.

I really liked the Brit show "Life On Mars" as well. It was remade in
the US also as a TV showed and it was absolutely dreadful. The follow-
up to the Brit show -- "Ashes to Ashes" -- didn't work a bit for me.
But "Life On Mars" was really good.

I agree. I think the latter half of the decade had much more original
concepts on network and cable television than in feature films.
Instead of going to see Synecdoche, I borrowed Liberty! from the
liberry for Seymour Hoffman as an angry Colonial militiaman.

And John Adams was a hell of a lot better than any biopic I saw in
theaters, with the possible exception of Milk.

1. Russian Ark: A single 90-minute moving camera shot through the
Hermitage in St. Petersburg, switching eras or even centuries as it
moves into each room or into the next building. A couple of thousand
actors and extras were kept in readiness, in costume, waiting for the
camera. Because of the limited availability of the location, there was
almost no rehearsal and time for only one take. It worked.

2. Being John Malkovich. Like it or not, no explanation should be
necessary.

This was certainly a most unusual movie. It conveyed the sense of a
mind grappling with new mimetic ideas. But I don't think the film
succeeded at keeping me entertained. Before long, I started to feel as
cold & still -- as mummified -- as a painting in the Hermitage.
Despite the ceaselessly moving camera, the impression of the whole
was, for me, one of inextricable stasis, as if I had been gummed to my
seat cushion.

(When I found out later that my nephew Adam had left a wad of chewed
gum on my chair, I about blew my stack.)

ARK was a circus act... showing what a filmmaker might do if given
enough ROPE. Still, I'd think most anyone must at least sit back and
applaud the feat. (I envy the relevant history buffs, for whom it
must feel transcendent every time they watch.)

Lost in Translation, I suppose for an economically stodgy fare,
lacking window seating for the Beastie Boys, Weezer, or redolently
colorful links to Blue Velvet and Alice in Wonderland, Kafka;- most
wouldn't think to call it a Stoic Unfolding, either.
