This scene takes place in Mel Brook's Robin Hood parody, Men in
Tights.

The marriage is announced.

the cardinal (Dick Van Patten) passes through a crowd of peasants.
Suddenly, a fat guy comes out and cries: "Hey Abbot".

Dick says, "I hate that guy".

Anyone get that reference? I don't see how that was funny.

You want someone to say that Lou Costello used, "Heyyyyy Abbotttt!" as
a catchphrase? OK.

Sorry friend Dick Van Patten was not in "Men in Tights" (he hasn't been in
anything of late), this was from the 1970s Mel Brooks Robin Hood show, "When
Things were Rotten" which is where "Hey Abbot" took place.

I use something like that in one of my stories "The Sloppy Seven" (Guess what
thats a rip-off on), anyway Major Niceman has privates Abbot and Alvin I think
you see where this is going.

According to the IMDb Dick Van Patten filmography:

14.Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993) .... Abbot
... aka Sacre Robin des bois (1993) (France)

Not only that, but it says he's been in one or two productions per year
over the past four years or so.

(And yes, he was also Friar Tuck in When Things Were Rotten.)

"Hey, Abbot!" was Lou Costello's catch phrase referring to his
partner Bud Abbot.

The inference in the film is that Van Patten (playing the part of a
church abbot) is tired of fat guys never missing a chance to pull his
chain by making fun of his office by pretending they're Lou Costello
to his (Van Patten's) Abbot/abbot. Imagine how tired you would be if
you're name were Livingston and happened to be a doctor of all the
people who would open the conversation with "Dr Livingston, I
presume." That kind of thing.

Thanks, i've heard of a & c, but haven't heard that "hey abbot" routine by
them. i doubt anyone else who are unfamiliar with a&c would catch that
reference.

Usually in the films, the A & C characters had other names as scripted. But on
Radio and in Television, they used their stage names, and you were more likely
there to hear "Hey AAAAABOTTTT!". The films would have variations on this but
with the scripted character names.

The only name I remember is Chic, however.

Can you name other names for Bud and Lou?

Some years back when we had a word processing job typing lists of doctors names
and address on that list there was DOCTORS James Bond, Tim Dalton, Roger
Moore, TWO DR. Dolittles and yes maybe two or three Dr. Livingstons.
