Greetings!
I am looking for films that parody or otherwise reprise the famous
Odessa steps sequence from Sergei Eisenstein's great silent film known in
English as Battleship Potemkin. Briefly, this is a sequence in which
people flee down a very long stairway, 100+ steps, with quick cutting to
reinforce the feeling of movement. There is a famous bit in which a baby
carriage rolls down the stairs included in the sequence.
I am aware of the parody which precedes the titles in Naked Gun 33
1/3. I'm sure there must be others; in fact, I'm pretty sure I've seen
something else myself. I would welcome suggestions. I will review the
newsgroups to which I post this message, but email to me would be even
better.
Thanks!

'The Naked Gun' was in fact parodying Brian De Palma's 'The
Untouchables' (1987), which in turn parodied 'Potemkin' (and was in
fact a last-minute bit of desperation on Brian De Palma's part, as the
budget for a major sequence had been cut, so he needed to come up with
something memorable that wouldn't cost a lot of money, which is why he
thought of restaging the Odessa Steps scene on the steps leading up to
the station).

There are also brief parodies in Woody Allen's 'Bananas' (1970) and
Terry Gilliam's 'Brazil' (1985) - and experimental video-maker
Zbigniew Rybczynski based an entire 30-minute short, 'Steps' (1987)
around a group of tourists visiting the Odessa Steps at the time of
the massacre (colour images of tourists are superimposed on the
black-and-white frames of Eisenstein's original).

There are also nods to 'Battleship Potemkin' in Woody Allen's 'Love
and Death', with a comic reversal of the stone lions montage. In
fact, that film contains dozens of Eisenstein references ('Alexander
Nevsky' also figures heavily).

You might also check out Zbigniew Rybczynski's video (I believe it's
entitled, "Steps," but I could be wrong), in which a group of tourists are
taken on a guided tour of the Odessa Steps sequence (via video chroma-key
compositing). It was shown on PBS several years back (I think in Alive Off
Center).

There was an obvious reference to this in DePalma's The
Untouchables during the shootout in the train station--IMHO, the
only worthwhile sequence in the whole film.

You should also be aware of the incredible true-life-imitates-art
video from when that guy Cruz shot up the White House. As the
two civilians rush in to tackle him as he's attempting to reload,
a baby carriage rolls toward the cameraman ...

I beleive the opening to "The Naked Gun 33 1/3-The Final Insult" is a
parody of THAT (the "Untouchables") scene! So I guess it qualifies as a
parody once-removed.

Woody Allen parodies this sequence mercilessly in the opening of "Bananas," complete with Howard Cosell reporting on the scene.

If it hasn't been mentioned yet, in the movie "Brazil" there's a
hilarious, shot by shot parody of that scene when the main character flees
the central services building. The baby carriage is replaced with a
vacuum cleaner, even the student with the glasses is in there.

It has been - and I notice this thread has degenerated into people
repeating the same three or four titles over and over again.

So can anyone think of something APART FROM the following:

'Bananas'
'Love and Death'
'Tezaab'
'Brazil'
'The Untouchables'
'The Naked Gun 33 1/3'
'Steps'

?

There is a film 'Deja Vu' (Poland, 1989), directed by Juliusz Machulski.
It is a comedy about american gangsters seeking a man in soviet Odessa.
They meet filmmakers many times on the streets and there is a reconstruction
of steps sequence.
