I realize I forgot to give a description of why I found THE PIANO
romantic, but here goes.
1. Location, location, location! Remote, isolated and exotic. Lush,
warm rainforest. Sandy white beach.
2. Two particular piano solos on the soundtrack called "Big My Secret"
and "The Scent of Love" - my favorites. Like fumbling during that first
encounter, enthusiasm, points of pleasure, slowness, deliberation.
Along with the location makes for great atmosphere.
3. Characters who know what they want and are unhesitant about getting
this.
4. Slow seduction - each piano key traded for a pleasure.
5. Slow revelation - those layers of Victorian clothes! How Baines
revels in that small but bare piece of skin showing through Ada's
leggings.
6. In the end, Ada and Baines are playing hide-and-seek - laughing and
changed, rediscovering each other still.
Very Romantic treatment of love, cloaking it in the exotic, the violent
and the extreme. It's rare to find a movie that creates such a unique,
vivid and self-sufficient universe all its own.
Froilan
"Falling In Love," with Meryl Streep and Robert Di Niro is one of my
favorites.

That was _An Affair to Remember_ which was a remake of _Love Affair_ and
which was remade again as _Love Affair_. It (aatr) was featured in _Sleepless
in Seattle_. And yes it was Cary Grant (following Charles Boyer and preceding
Warren Beatty).

drabbing down her hair and lightening her lipstick color was pretty much
a failure, I thought. A girl that pretty could have done way better

from great.

Why? Four answers: Danson, Rossellini, Young and Peterson. The first two
are giving such comfy, affectless performances that they appear to be
winging it. Especially Danson: in his most satisfying screen role to date,
with his billboard forehead and raked-over rugpiece, he's gliding
effortlessly -- maybe even miraculously -- without getting caught in the
stickiness. It's got to be Rossellini's beauty and disarming naturalism
that so infuses him with this level of congeniality; she helps turn a
cuckold into a matinee idol. Unlike her mother, who really wasn't what
we'd call a natural wonder (she often hid behind an aura of cool
stateliness), Rossellini is artless vulnerability; the rush of love and
warmth she springs forth -- as well as receives from us -- seems
boundless. She's the Madonna of our dreams; as icon, she glows from an
inner source so powerfully positive it subjugates all. And who would have
thought it possible to ever praise Sean Young? Decked in the tramp chic of
a would-be fashion diva, Young's bouncy zipless sexuality probably isn't
revelation but it's awfully entertaining. Peterson's premature gray hair
and stocky cockiness have rarely been used this well. (Both Peterson and
Young belong together in a movie of their own; they might make fresh
Albee's Nick and Honey.)
"Cousins" is an antidote for "Fatal Attraction," the 1987 slasher that
supposedly renewed the terror and horror in adultery. Though neither are
examples of realism, the hanky panky in "Cousins" is more openly
commonplace. Social gatherings of large families can be hazardous to
general health -- there often hangs in the air an anxiety about possible
sudden bitch quarrels and/or fist fights, drunken scenes, secret liaisons.
And flirty dare: a news anchor I know once had the hots for a friend of
mine at one such gathering and as she dug into her purse to find a pen to
write down her private number for him, a few condoms spilled out on the
bar and, without missing a beat, she looked at him and asked, "Do you
think they'll fit?" That's more or less the tone of "Cousins." In spite of
propriety, the biology continues.
Hey, its a love story!! (if you read between the lines......)
That's rubbish. 'The American President' is a film about what it means
to be the US President today. Forget about the romance - take it away,
in fact - and what you have is a study of the compromises which have to
be made in order to pass legislation in Washington.
Now, as to the 'niceness' of President Shepherd (which presumably is
what you'd maintain is part of Reiner's campaign), do you think that a
romance between a lobbyist and a complete bastard president would work?
What would she see in him? Just because the writer (Aaron Sorkin, I
believe) painted a picture of a president who's a nice guy and who
behaves with honour, that doesn't mean the film's got a political
agenda.

Yes, but she's a good enough actress to hold my interest as the "ultimate"
bad girl and my sympathy as "cutey-boo". Her performance was what made the
film watchable and enjoyable despite getting conked on the head with over-
simplified "issues" at the end.

I've seen the previous two versions of Love Affair (or An Affair To
Remember). The originial film quality is so bad that it detracts from
the story, especially when you know the story. On first viewing of
the latest version, instead of enjoying the movie, I compared it to An
Affair to Remember, and didn't truly appreciate it until I viewed it
again. Although the first act of Love Affair (The one with Beatty and
Benning) irritated me to no end because of the loud music and crowds,
I must admit that it's now my favorite version, mainly because of the
freshness and honesty of Katherine Hepburn.
But if you want to talk old/new...what about Sabrina. I'd like
opinions on this classic love story.
a love story about a lobbyist and a president, showing them as warm and
wonderful people. kinda makes you go all soft inside, doesn't it?

The politics? The political dealing over the specifics of fossil-fuel
emissions? The fact that the American public don't link gun ownership
and gun-related crime? In the first instance it's shown that politics
means dealing and compromising, and who knows about the second... maybe
I just agreed with the film's "stance" on gun-control.

Sorry no opinions on Sabrina, but I would like to jump into this thread and
suggest a movie that I have always enjoyed. ALWAYS with Richard Dreyfuss, John
Goodman and Holly Hunter. Listed in my movie guide as "An old-fashioned

is apt at pushing all the emotional buttons with his movies.

Maybe, but: There's a whole long speech at the end of the film about
character, the president, opposition to freedom of speech and the ACLU.
There's that extended metaphor about sand and mirages and there's the
reference to people not electing a president who's in a wheelchair.
That's just off the top of my head, and it's plenty of politics for a
romance, IMO.
