that movies like "Jaws 3" are soon to be releases on DVD, let's name some
great movies that SHOULD be available on DVD?
Here's my list:
Blow-up (Antonioni)
Freaks (Browning)
Performance (Roeg)
Persona (Bergman)
Repulsion (Polanski)
The Other (Tryon)
Wild at Heart (Lynch)
And, what the hell - "200 Motels" (Zappa). The movie makes no sense but
sure is alot of fun, the music is great, and the special effects
entertaining.

"Cabin Boy" is WAY better than "Wild At Heart". And, I'm ashamed to admit, I've
seen it more often than "Persona".

Maybe I should give "Cabin Boy" a second chance. I was a big fan of Chris
Elliott when he was a recurring character on Late Nite. I also liked "Get a
Life". But I saw "Cabin Boy" once about 8 years ago and thought it was
utter rubbish.

"Cabin Boy" is not for the weak, my friend. It helps to force yourself into a,
shall we say, lower brain activity before watching, the kind of state best
acheived either through sheer exhaustion, a half-keg of Guiness, or a handful of
Camelot Carrots. The movie is the spiritual heir to the films of Ed Wood; if
that sounds like a recommendation, then you have my blessings.
Mark my words: Twenty years from now, film scholars of the future will hold
aloft "Cabin Boy" as a lost comedic masterpiece, a great slab of pop surrealism
decades ahead of it's time, and all you disbelievers will nod your head in
faux-agreement, pretending that you thought so all along, secretly wishing you
had heeded these very words you are reading right at this very moment.
Or not. Whatever.

Yeah - that's the one I saw. But it's $60 and not region 1. What do you
mean when you say the DVD on Amazon.ca is"public domain"? Is it an
illegitimate copy? Surely Amazon couldn't get away with something like
that.

I recently upgraded my Apex AD-600 to be region free because I was thinking
about buying that French DVD set on Ebay that includes "Repulsion". But,
$60 is alot of money, especially when you can't share the DVD with anyone -
I'd only be able to watch it on my player.

Looking at individual scenes, Wild At Heart has some fantastic
sections. Overall it's too uneven as a film for me, but those sections
are inspired art. ie Cage and Dern stumble upon the car accident and
Sherilyn Fenn's fine performance. Awesome. Beautiful music too. -doug

I'd like to see O Lucky Man! With a Malcolm McDowell commentary, and
some more W.C. Fields films being released.

Spielberg resisted DVD pretty strongly for a long time. I think it's
only in the last year or so that he caved.
The Indy movies were supposedly scheduled to be rereleased on
laserdisc until they were pulled without explanation, which led to a
lot of speculation that they were planning a big deluxe DVD release.
No luck yet, though.

Well considering it's probably his best film, I've often wondered why Mike
Leigh's "Naked" has never been released on DVD - most of his (lesser) others
are. Surely they should put that right this year.
Angel -- who is quite happy at the moment because the Mail On Sunday
Newspaper decided to give away for free "The Ipcress File" and "Brief
Encounter" as part of a DVD promo thus saving me the bother of having to get
them. (Always had a particular soft spot of The Ipcress File).

Lucas has also been pretty resistant to the idea of DVD as well (see
original SW series), and may be a factor with the Indy series no show on the
format.
Spielberg also refuses to bite the bullet with commentary tracks, claiming
that you'd never find his commentary on any one because he feels they are
intrusive.
He famously had his own personal director's commentary on Lawrence of Arabia
by non other than David Lean himself. But halfway through, he said he just
wanted to turn and tell him to shut up because he was enjoying the film too
much.

fact, since a bunch of DVD prices just dropped - I see that
"Repulsion" is now priced at CAD$7.98). Have been happy with the
service. Unless they say an item is in stock, though, you should be
prepared to wait. I've only cancelled one item, when it didn't arrive
after four months (the basic Some Like It Hot, oddly, since it seems
common enough). Other DVDs have arrived in a far more timely way. You
will be expected to pay when you order; doesn't bother me, but some
people hate that..
I have read here that if a problem arises, it can take a very long
time before you receive a response - conjecture is that they don't
have many English-speaking employees. Haven't had any problems, so I
couldn't say. Cancellations are done on-line, very easy to do but I'm
not sure if their current policy is credit against future orders or
credit card refunds.
Regarding the shipping costs at amazon.ca: If it's any help,
promotional code CANADAVCARDS will take CAD$10 off a $50 order until
April30th, and CANADASKY535 $5 off a $35 order until Aug31st. At the
moment they haven't any particular sales other than the usual 30% for
preorders.

on June 10. It will be a two-disc set.

Thanks for the info, Maureen. I think I'll try them out. Interesting that
you mention "Some Like it Hot". I saw that recently (for the first time),
and I can't believe that movie isn't more common. I couldn't stop laughing.

I've got them on VHS, but I wouldn't mind nice letterboxed DVDs.

Say what you will about Heston's political views (actually, please

was cool! Plus at least Omega Man was on laserdisc, so how hard could

Hm, I haven't heard the Time After Time commentary yet, but that's a
couple of hours. It might be kind of interesting to hear him getting
increasingly desperate for something to say as OLM wears on....

Specifically, the Ulmer Black Cat, but any movie named The Black Cat that isn't
on DVD already should be on DVD, especially the Mimsy Farmer movie directed by
Lucio Fulci (that one probably is) and the 1966 gore film. I don't know what
happened to the Karloff/Lugosi Black Cat DVD. It was announced as part of that
great Universal Horrors DVD series but it never materialized and the series
stopped. Very disappointing.

He's talking about the 1975 film BUG! based on the novel "The Hephaestus
Plague." Intelligent insects come out of an earthquake crevice. When they
rub their legs together like crickets do they generate enough heat to start
fires. It was a William Castle production and ran on a double bill with
the much better PHASE IV.
