"Cavalcade" (1933) & the Five Kings

I just finished watching the splendid "Cavalcade" (1933) with Clive
Brook (whose performance is in the grand tradition of John Barrymore &
Leslie Howard).

It's a sentimental recounting of the decline of the noble British
Empire as experienced by a single crusty but humane family living in
London's West End, from New Year's 1900 to 1933.

The family, including soldiers returned home from the Boer Wars &
young children & wives dressed in mourning chiffon, watches the
cortege of Queen Victoria pass through the streets in 1901. One of the
characters turns to the other & says, "Just think! Five kings
following the Queen."

Which five kings participated in Victoria's funeral procession? It's
extremely important that I be told!

How did you see CAVALCADE? Was it on TV? On disc? On tape? It's one of
the very few Best Picture Oscar winners I've never seen.

It was on a cable channel so I used my brand-new DVR to record it &
watch it at my convenience! I can't remember which cable channel it
was on -- might have been IFC or something.

To think that only 13 years later, Kaiser Willie would attack King
George's realm.

Nine years later, *nine* kings rode in Edward VII's procession: his
successor, George V; the same Kaiser Wilhelm; and the kings of Spain,
Portugal, Denmark, Norway, Greece, Bulgaria and the Belgians (a new,
young one). Oh, yes, and also the heir to the Austian throne, Archduke
Franz Ferdinand.

DVR'd "Cavalcade" off FMC.
How that boring, plodding mishmash ever won an Oscar is a mystery to me.
I had to stop watching after about 15 minutes.
I suppose audiences were easier to please 80 years ago!
