This movie really works visually, but it's flattened by a hopeless
plot. The acting is the full overly expansive style common to the
silent films.

What seems most crippling - seemingly to contemporary audiences, at
any rate - is the virtually endless preparation and backstory before
the space shot finally takes place. Still, a visually impressive
film, even if it pales beside "Metropolis" in that regard.

Personally, I enjoy the Soviet production "Aelita, Queen of Mars"
which also suffers from an over-long prologue to its space action
section, but at least there's an absurd, laughable political agenda
lurking behind the delay in the proceedings.
