They're going backwards.

Moviemakers should be putting their movies on Netflix so that
movies are as easy as possible to access, without having to steal
them. That way, their main audience here in the United States
would have the best access to movies that they are paying for.
Everybody who isn't willing to pay anything will have to continue
doing it the old-fashioned way... download, unpack, and take your
chance on whether it's a good movie. Making access as easy as
possible through Netflix would give an advantage to those who pay
for movies. Those who do not pay for movies could not have such
easy access, because easy access is easy to detect.

But apparently they just don't get it.

They removed Dumb and Dumber?!

Next going to remove Serenity, and every other freaking movie that I
like.

You can buy used copies on Amazon cheaper then Netflix or a rental.

Only from streaming, apparently. On February 29 for Young
Frankenstein. Dumb and Dumber is gone from streaming but Serenity is
still there. You can still get the DVDs for all of them.

I don't have streaming now, but when I did before the
price change, it appeared that netflix was rotating
movies through streaming availability, removing some
in order to add others. At the time there seemed no
reason to think that the removals were permanent.

Although, if they're not making money from the movies being on Netflix,
from their point of view people might as well be stealing the movies.
The problem now is that studios want to be paid to have films available
for streaming on Netflix. IIRC Netflix arranges contracts so that X
number of films from a studio are available at any one time, so things
rotate in and out of streaming. Wait a few months, and you'll be able
to watch Young Frankenstein for free again. Or just buy the DVD.

Agreed. Stuff rotates through streaming all the time, but for some reason
there are a few Usenet nuts that proclaim the end of the world everytime
something goes away...and they are strangely silent when stuff (re)appears
on Netflix streaming. Its almost like they have an agenda.

It means the content owners call the shots, not Netflix.

When something appears on Netflix for streaming, it usually means you
have years (literally) to watch it, so if all of a sudden your world
is shattered because Young Frankenstein isn't there anymore, tough
luck.

checking the Instant Watch browser on my Roku box which lists
expiration dates on films new to steaming:

Being Elmo: A Puppateer's Journey (February 22, 2022)
Renion (February 21, 2014)
The Little Death (Augusr 21, 2013)
Today's Special (February 21, 2013)
Stay Cool (Febraru 20, 2015)
The Wavy Gravy Movie: Saint Misbehavin' (February 17, 2013)
Back Door Channels: The Price of Peace (August 15, 2013)
Bloodfist (August 1, 2012--better hurry up and watch that one)
Bloomington (August 15, 2013)
Caged Heat (August 1, 2012--the first one listed I want to watch,
except for maybe that Wavy Gravy doc.)
Chick Magnet (February 14, 2014)
Grand Theft Auto (August 12, 2012--looks like it's the Roger Corman
productions with the early expiration dates.)
Humandoids from the Deep (August 1, 2012--yup--sure is.)
I'm Glad My Mother is Alive (February 15, 2013)
In Dreams (May 1, 2012--not long at all.)
Judas Kiss (August 15, 2013)

But what I found odd was that some movies were available
on streaming, but not on DVD. 'Turning Point' was one
that I remember.

There's quite a few like that, like a godawful print of Ken Russell's
kinda alright Salome's Last Dance, which looks like a VHS version. So
maybe it's a case of having the source material but not an actual DVD
to ship out.

But at least they are getting money for their movies through
Netflix. They should make watching their movies easy. As far as I
know, streaming on Netflix is the easiest. There is no reason to
make their movies more difficult to watch than they have to be. It
makes zero sense. But they don't, because they don't like their
consumers? Keeping their movies from Netflix streaming goes
against the market. If they really don't care about anything
except making money, therefore piracy is okay because the
alternative of having customers pay through Netflix does not rake
in more money? Movies should be watchable in the easiest way
possible. What are they waiting for?

The STARZ offerings have been there for years. If you haven't watched them
yet, then you don't actually care about watching them. If you have watched
them recently, then you are better off having them taken away for awhile so
that you stop spinning your wheels on watching the same thing over and over.
The only item that *really* matter is the Spartacus original series for
which tonight's episode is the last one for Netflix viewers.

Our public library gets all those DVDs though. They must look at the
title and think "historical fiction" and give it a pass.

Didn't Boss just start up on Netflix streaming? Is it going to be
taken out of rotation too?

Past seasons of Spartacus might be at your local library, but not the
current season as it is only half way through at the moment.

>Didn't Boss just start up on Netflix streaming? Is it going to be

Yes, Boss will be gone as well. I only watched the first episode and it was
way to over the top soap opera stuff for me. In any case, the season
finished at the end of last year so people that wanted to watch it have had
plenty of time to do so. The only real loss would be for the people that
enjoyed season #1 via Netflix and won't get to watch season #2...until the
DVDs show up at the local library.
