I had a recording of a Suspense radio program called "Leinegen vs. the Ants",
which (as I recall) was a dramatization of a film of the same name.

Of several replies so far, Gerald Wright's is the correct one. It is,
indeed, "The Naked Jungle" (1954). References to "Leiningen vs. the Ants"
are to the Carl Stephenson short story on which the film is based. Radio
and TV versions have taken the title of the original story, which was
included in a popular 10th grade English textbook when I was in high
school (it originally appeared in an anthology, "The Bedside Esquire").

"The Naked Jungle", 1954ish, directed by Jerry Hopper I think, also starring
Eleanor Parker and William ("Cannon") Conrad. Not a bad film, IMO.

unfortunatley for art, the ants lost.:-)

It's "Lionage and the Ants" - I'm not sure of the spelling, nor
can I remember who the author of the original story is.
I can assert that Heston was definitely in it. He was the plantation owner.
Unless I'm remembering wrong, the ants won. At least Charlton Heston
didn't make it out alive, I _think_. Luckily, it was only a movie and
Heston is around to remind us the revisionist nonsense about him being a
bad actor should be squashed like a bug;-}
That was "The Naked Jungle". It was produced in the 50's sometime, and
was based on a short story by Carl Stephenson called "Leiningen Versus
the Ants". And yes, it was Charlton Heston.

Yes, I always loved this movie. Charleton Heston is in it, but, alas, I
can not remember the name either. Sorry.
I remember that is was based on a short story called
"Lernigan (sp?) versus the Ants" Was that the title of the movie too?

I believe the title of that movie is: The Naked Jungle. When I was a kid
it scared the hell outta me.

Yup. "The Naked Jungle", 1953, dir. Byron Haskin, also starring Eleanor
Parker and William ("Cannon") Conrad. Based on "Leiningen vs. the Ants".
Wasn't the story by Ray Bradbury or someone like that?

'Lennigan Versus the Ants', I think; but the name of the movie
was "The Naked Jungle". I'd love to see it again as an adult.
I seem to remember a scene where they had to burn the piano of
Heston's love interest in order to deter the ants. Great corny
stuff.

The story was written by H.G. Wells.
Naaaa. You're thinking of Soylent Green.

L. vs. the Ants was dramatized on the radio show "Escape!" All the women
and children were sent away from the plantation before the action begins.
The movie featured a love interest? I can't believe it. Or, rather,
being familiar with Hollywood's treatment of material, I must believe it.

It's not by Wells. The author's name is Carl Forrester or something like that.

they'll reach your plantation in two days at the latest.'"
