Does anybody out there have an opinion on the true identity of Jame Gumb? I have a thought...
Is it possible that he was the son of Mrs. Littman? Remember that at the end, Agent Starling
visits the house of Mrs. Littman, who was the first victim's boss. The first victim was known
by Buffalo Bill, and that was the house he lived at. He said something about Littman having a
son, could he have been referencing himself? And what exactly was in that bathtub in the
basement? Possibly Mrs. Littman? Any ideas?

No, in the book, it goes much more into Gumb's character; he was just a
lonely fellow--albeit a deranged one--who had worked with (or near?) that
first victim. It's been a while since I read it, but it explains him
much better than the movie does. I don't think I'd have really
understood all about him if I had to go by what the movie shows. Read
the book! It's better than the film!

FYI-
(In the book), Gumb's mother was a flighty, silly woman who acted in a
few cheap porn movies. He did kill her, and (in the film) it is her body
that we catch a momentary glimpse of in the bathtub.
Mrs. Littman was his employer; his first victim also worked for her
(which is how they knew one another). The movie makes it appear that they
were neighbors-
