Hedy Lamarr had a nude scene in a Czech movie called "Ecstasy" made in the
1930s.
The "Guinness Book of Film Facts and Feats"<*> makes an interesting point
about this 1932 film: that it is "celebrated as the first motion picture
containing a nude scene, which it was not, rather than the first to show
sexual intercourse, which it was"!
Hedy Lamarr, of course, was also an electrical engineer. Interesting
combination, that.
Nudity on film goes back almost to the beginning of movies -- the French
were making blue movies (stripteases and such) in the 1890s. However,
in 1913 Britain adopted a censorship system that banned nudity, and the
US followed suit with the Hays code in 1934.
>> Is there any great actress who have been in the nude in films or photos?
Well, first, it depends on what one means by great, doesn't it? And
I also assume this again means before 1960. One example that comes
immediately to mind is a nude photo of Marilyn Monroe that was taken
by Tom Kelley and first appeared anonymously on a calendar. After she
was recognized, Hugh Hefner bought the rights to the photo and put it
in the first issue of Playboy (December 1953).
Returning to movies, the first leading lady to appear nude on screen was
Audrey Munson in Inspiration (1915), and she did it again in Purity (1916).
The aforementioned book lists a bunch of other nude appearances in leading
roles in the pre-Hays era, but none by anyone who's really well known today.

That's the right date, but I certainly don't recall any nude scenes. There was
a nude statue of Dietrich in the same year's "Song of Songs".
However, D.W. Griffith used nudes in "Intolerance" and "Orphans of the Storm".
And famed swimmer Annette Kellerman appeared nude in some films from the early
teens.

Pre-Code Hollywood was far from nude-free, as other posters have replied.
One example out of many is _Tarzan and His Mate_ which features Jane
skinny-dipping as well as both Tarzan and Jane in revealing loincloths.

Wull--although that was before my time, ha ha ha or at least
before I watched that kind of movie, LOL
The first nude scene was in a silent film made in the teens called
DAUGHTER OF GODS, if I'm not mistaken. Annette Kellerman is the first
actress to appear nude (at least topless) onscreen. I could be wrong.
Earlier than that ... also in the silent version of BEN HUR I think...

It's HEDLEY Lamarr!

In the Russian history montage at the beginning there are some nude
slave-type women...

Check out the opening montage sequence on the MCA videotape. There's some
incidental nudity.

Actually, nudity wasn't that uncommon before 1960s. First, we have pre-Code
Hollywood (original 1932 TARZAN contained the scenes of Jane
skinny-dipping). Than Europe that always used to be more liberal in those
matters (Ingmar Bergman's 1952 SUMMER WITH MONICA contains nudity; so does
1956 version of Roger Vadim's AND GOD CREATED WOMAN with Brigitte Bardot).

Bunuel's 1928 film "Un Chien Andalou."

That was a stunt woman. O'Sullivan said she did do the run through
the jungle after the swim in a g-string.
Nudity disappeared from mainstream US movies in the mid thirties
with the advent of the Hayes Office. The success of imports
such as the Bridgitte Bardot movies of the late fifties and
early sixties put pressure on the US industry to relax censorship.

Can't resist an OLD joke, eh Bill?
Don't have to -- have a 16mm print. Yes, there are some flashes of nudity, but
those montage scenes are taken from silent films. But, you are right.
The films I've now seen from the '30s: L'Atalante, Vampyr, M, Osaka Elegy,
L'Age d'Or, Earth - I'm becoming convinced it must be the greatest era of
filmmaking.
