I just read that Juanita Hill who created the role of Bloody Mary on Broadway
and did the role in the movie had her voice dubbed for the movie. Does anyone
know who did her voice in the movie?

After hearing Hill's voice in the role she did in the Flower Drum Song, I
can't believe they used someone else's voice, Does anyone know why?

Please e-mail as well as post. Thanks....Dubi

Her name was Juanita Hall.

According to THE MOTION PICTURE GUIDE (p.3050) Juanita Hall's songs in the
film were actually sung by Muriel Smith, who had played Bloody Mary in the
London production of "South Pacific". Although Hall was originally
scheduled to use her own singing voice and actually pre-recorded her
songs, Muriel Smith was employed at the last minute after Richard Rodgers
was unhappy with Hall's pre-recordings.

Muriel Smith dubbed for Juanita Hall in South Pacific at Richard Rodgers'
insistance. Rodgers was a stickler to see that his songs were performed
exactly the way he wanted them, and though Juanita had a pleasant enough
voice, and was excellent in the role, he preferred the singing voice of Smith,
you had also played Bloody Mary on stage, at some point.

Rodgers was a real taskmaster regarding those who sang his songs. Supposedly
he browbeat Pat Suzuki in the stage version of Flower Drum Song until she sang
"I Enjoy Being a Girl" *exactly* the way he wanted to hear it, and then told her, "Don't
ever do it any better!"
