have you gone frickin' mad? what kind of a choice is that? what kind of a
planet do you come from? what kind of testosterone is that? what? why? when?
how? you must be a stark raving looonatic, from a stark raving looonatic
asylum? How? what, how could u ever put helen hunt there, jeez? and emma
thompson, gewd? and besides, i thought cate blanchett had drowned somewhere
in the atlantic ocean? and ellen barkin, hmm, a bit too old fer me, plus i
have no liking for the cardboard characters and superficial filmmaking
darren aranofsky does, even though thats beside the point.

moving on from my fevered reaction- making myself clear that i dont agree

In regard to the original post, I dont think Sissy Spacek would qualify as
being from the past 20 years. She was in films during the seventies.

And I love shallow, superficial lists like these, so.....

Jennifer Connelly
Phoebe Cates
Mia Sara
Madelyn Stowe
Milla Jovovich (sp?)

and a whole bunch of really young ones (18-20 years old) that I am ashamed to
list because I am past forty.

Nor is she the least bit sexy JN. (Sissy)
I like your list except for Mia Sara. I do like her but I consider her a plain
Jane.
I do not know Jennifer Connelly.
I have seen Jovovich only in the Jeanne D'Arc movie and she screamed too much to
be sexy.
But Cates and Stowe, you do have sexy.

Wull-who will say that I think that LuLu Sobieski (sp) is very sexy and I am
older than you JN, :-)

Yes, I think we can top these (although Barkin is a favorite of mine):

Juliette Binoche
Salma Hayek
Kim Basinger
Denise Richards
Jackie Bisset (a little early, but still a stunner)
Angelina Jolie
Elle MacPherson
Anne Parillaud (amazing face)
Michelle Pfeiffer
Julianne Moore (not nearly as pretty as, say, Cindy Crawford, but she does
have that certian something)

These are just off the top of my head. I could be wrong.

I certainly would not knock anyone else's list, because it is all so
subjective, but I am surprised at the number of actresses listed as "sexy" whom
I find to be --- well -- ugly. Eye of the beholder I guess.

damn straight Emma Thompson.
In fact when Branagh threw her over for little Helena Bonham Carter, I
realized that he no longer had good taste in women.

How come nobody has mentioned Gwyneth Paltrow? Too cold and distant? not
really.

But Helen Mirren? Well, I'm at least a decade and a half older than she is,
and I'd never date her because she is just....too.....old (and
unattractive). Good actress though.

There's something about Madeleine Stowe that is incredibly sexy, but I
forget what it is!

Which reminds me....I think Andie MacDowell is incredibly sexy. She
has various attributes that I like but it's her intelligence that ties
it all together. In that same vein, I find Pamela Anderson Lee
extremely unsexy.

For a woman to be sexy she has to be smart enough to be not easily
impressed or bedded.

What, no Olsen twins? And unless that is Natalie Portman in her early
career ("The Professional") you have no reason to fear damnation. These
girls are all fair game, biologically speaking. You are far from anything
remotely resembling perversion, so relax and enjoy.

It wasn't my list, but I'm a fan of these as well--they're stars in Chinese
and Hong Kong films.

Taiwanese Brigitte Lin can be seen in THE BRIDE WITH WHITE HAIR, PEKING
OPERA BLUES and EAST IS RED. She's beautiful and intense, with a wilting
gaze. and many of her more recent roles were extremely powerful women, often
martial artists with incredible powers on the brink of sanity. She retired
a number of years ago.

Maggie Cheung's most recently been in Wong Kar-Wai's IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE,
where she was devsatingly beautiful and elegantly filmed. She's married to
French director Olivier Assayas, who (I believe) directed her as herself in
IRMA VEP. She's been in many dramatic films which I'm not as familiar with,
but she's great in supporting roles in Jackie Chan's POLICE STORY (1, 2 and
3) and PROJECT A Part II. She did action in HEROIC TRIO with CROUCHING
TIGER's Michelle Yeoh and "Chinese Madonna", Anita Mui.

I don't know as much about Cheung Man, but she's been in a lot of movies
with comedian Stephen Chow Sing Chi, such as FIGHT BACK TO SCHOOL (1, 2 and
3), ROYAL TRAMP and GOD OF GAMBLERS 2.

Michelle Reis was cute in SWORDSMAN 2 and FONG SAI YUK, both with Jet Li.

I'd also add Rosamund Kwan (ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA 1, 2, and 3) and
PEKING OPERA BLUES.

I'm also partial to another Taiwanese, Shu Qi (Jackie Chan's GORGEOUS).

I've heard that phrase used a lot.
The "thinking woman's sex symbol" or the
"thinking man's sex symbol".
Is that just a nice way of saying someone's not really attractive in the
conventional/universal sense but she/he has certain charms that somebody in
this planet could possibly appreciate.
Is it a compliment?

Brigitte Lin -- star of Taiwanese weepies, soap operas and romantic
comedies from the early 70's until the mid-80's, when she switched
languages and countries, and genres to become a major star ofHong Kong
action films and dramas. American viewers may know her best for 1994's
THE BRIDE WITH WHITE HAIR (it's hard to believe she's in her mid-40's in
this, although she looks more her age in the Making Of documentary
included on the VHS tape and DVD). Retired now. One of her last roles
was the drug smugler/assassin in sunglasses and blonde wig (an homage to
GLORIA) in CHUNGKING EXPRESS, currently being shown on the Sundance
Channel at various times this week. Her role as the tragic
magically-transsexual villain Asia the Invincible in the Jet Li film
SWORDSMAN 2 was the acknowledged inspiration for Xena (which also borrowed
several riffs from BRIDE WITH WHITE HAIR). For some reason, was often
cast in cross-dressing roles in the latter part of her career, starting
with Tsui Hark's classic PEKING OPERA BLUES, in which she played a
revolutionary who prefers a stylish tuxedo to traditional Chinese
clothes. Has the most amazing piercing stare of any actress since the
silent era; one look into those laser beam eyes and you can readily
believe her character is superhuman (she'd have XENA's Lucy Lawless for
breakfast).

Maggie Cheung -- former Miss Hong Kong runner-up and model (born in Kent
-- she sounds very English) first known for playing Jackie Chan's
girlfriend in the POLICE STORY series. Not much of an actress at first,
but cute and funny with a flair for knockabout comedy (she takes some
great pratfalls in the Chan films). She got more gorgeous with age, and
in the 90's suddenly blossomed into one of the best actresses of her
generation, in any country or language. She's amazing in Stanley Kwan's
ACTRESS, aka CENTRE STAGE, the finest biopic of a real-life movie star
I've ever seen, in which she played Ruan Ling Yu, the "Chinese Garbo" who
committed suicide in the early 30's after being slandered in the Shanghai
press (she won Best Actress at the Berlin Film Festival for this). She
has only one scene in Wong Kar-Wai's oblique, frustrating but beautiful
ASHES OF TIME, shot mostly as a tightening close-up on her exquisite
doomed face, but she's the heart and soul of the film. Some American fans
know her mainly as the bustier-and-kneepads wearing, motorcyle-riding,
shotgunning-shooting mercenary Thief Catcher in THE HEROIC TRIO. She's
pretty amazing as the immortal snake spirit adapting to her new human form
in Tsui Hark's gorgeous, goofy, lyrical GREEN SNAKE (recently seen as part
of the Tsui Film Festival in NYC). Just won the Hong Kong Film Critics'
Association Best Actress award for Wong Kar-Wai's IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE.
Can be found in video stores in IRMA VEP (playing herself) and THE CHINESE
BOX (in which she's far more interesting than top-billed Jeremy Irons and
Gong Li). Has also won awards for her roles in RED DUST, DAYS OF BEING
WILD, COMRADES ALMOST A LOVE STORY and THE SOONG SISTERS.

Cheung Man (Sharla Cheung) -- Not nearly as big a star as the above two
(and with nothing like Maggie Cheung's arthouse cachet), but amazingly
beautiful and a quite decent actress in Hong Kong fantasy films and
comedies of the early and mid 90's. She shows up at the end of Stephen
Chiao's GOD OF GAMBLERS: BACK TO SHANGHAI in a little black dress and
makes one forget all the previous footage of Gong Li. I assume she's
retired now, as I've seen no films with her in them since before the
Handover, and youth-obsessed HK audiences have little interest in
actresses over 25 (with a few notable exceptions), much less over 30.

Michelle Reis (Michelle Lee) -- Chinese/Portugese star of various Hong
Kong and Tawainese action films and comedies, such as FONG SAI YUK (where
she was Jet Li's love interest) and SWORDSMAN 2 (where she was Jet's
tomboyish sidekick "Kiddo"). Seems to have graduated to art films. Was
the neurotic, manipulative Agent who arranges Leon Lai's hits in FALLEN
ANGELS (seen on Sundance recently) and masturabates to Laurie Anderson.
More recently in the Taiwanese THE FLOWERS OF SHANGHAI.

Elina Lowensohn -- Hungarian-born actress best known for New York based
indy films. First gained attention in Hal Hartley's SIMPLE MEN (several
critics compared her to a Hungarian Winona Ryder). Also in Hartley's
AMATEUR. Perhaps seen to best advantage in the pretentious but
interesting arthouse vampire comedy NADJA (essentially a remake of
DRACULA'S DAUGHTER), which made great iconic use of her striking face.
Seen in character roles in films like BASQUIAT. Tends to get cast as
hard/brittle/pretentious sophisticates these days, and may not be ageing
as well as the actresses listed above.

She's certainly beautiful, but doesn't appeal to me as much as her fellow
Chinese divas Brigitte Lin and Maggie Cheung. I get a bit tired of all
the noble suffering in her mainland films, and there's something a bit
frosty about her. Indeed, I much prefer her when she works in Hong Kong
and lets her hair down, flying through the air and shooting rays from her
eyes in an aerial dogfight with Brigitte Lin and SEMI-GODS AND DEMI-DEVILS
(aka THE DRAGON CHRONICLES) and doing a jitter-bug with Stephen Chiao in
the delirious "Roast Pork Buns" number in GOD OF GAMBLERS 3: BACK TO
SHANGHAI.

Still, there's no denying that she's more gorgeous.

I tend to define it as someone who is not merely attractive, but also mature
and intelligent. Ms. Mastrantonio has never traded solely on her looks and
has consistenly played strong, smart women. She also is getting more
attractive to me as she gets older, as are Susan Sarandon and Sigourney
Weaver.
Of course, thinking you're the only person in the world who truly
appreciates your partner is part of sex appeal, too. "If only they knew what
I knew..."
I also find all kinds of women attractive, and not necessarily the
conventionally good looking.

Of course! *Nadja* is one of my more interesting moviegoing experiences.
(I saw it on a date; those of you who have seen the film know how ironic
that is.) I'm not sure I'd put her in the same category as some of the

You want a thinking man's sex symbol? Try a basically plain-looking

He's a photographer. And if he is lying and isnt actually having sex with
these girls, he STILL has photos of them naked, negatives and all. That's
not proof of sex, but its good stuff regardless, and I believe him anyway.
I tell you it's such a scam. He tells girls at parties that he does nudes,
and they offer to pose for him.

Hey, at least I get to see the photos.

I've only seen Janssen in that one Bond film where she did that cartoon lust
thing. Not particularly sexy.

I listed mine according to their ages, but the ones I joke about being the 2nd
Mrs. Davises are Binoche and Hunt. Bonnie Hunt is just great. Smart, funny,
pretty, amiable, drawn-to-human-scale. Binoche started off that way. She was
perfect as Terese in Unbearable Lightness. The "Oh, that Anna Karenina?" scene
was just great. But my all-time sexiest scene from this group comes from
Beckinsale in Cold Comfort Farm where she's stitching up some tea doilies and
just tosses Rupert Sewell around in a stictly-no-contest fashion. The only
scene where looking over the top of reading glasses is sexy. 2nd place: Annie
Potts washing off Mark Hamill at a car wash in Corvette Summer. "What a mess!"
in a voice that's just full of indulgence.

Katie Holmes emerged from the pack of class-room cuties in Wonder Boys. 25
years ago when I went to departmental parties, the "smartest graduate student"
would be there and Holmes seems to know what that entails. She may look like
the typical TV role dope but I think she'll actually have an acting career.
Like Reese Witherspoon who really should have made the list, but I didn't know
who else to kick off.
Ditto Jane Horrocks whose Bubble in AbFab is like something out of the 19th
century.

The French actresses seem obvious to me. Irene Jacob seems like a French Bonnie
Hunt: genuinely smart and human-scale. And Sophie Marceau: great eyes.

Annette Benning is the sex at the core of The Grifters, the most sexual movie I
can think of.

Emily Lloyd is my list's outlier. She was so good at the start of her career
(Wish You Were Here, Cookie, and In Country) and the little sidelong glance she
gives Craig Sheffer (The River Runs Through It) before they ride over the
bridge is the best thing in the movie for me. I understand that she's got a
reputation as a pill. What a waste. What a great talent. Perfect ear for
dialog. Disappears into her roles like a young Sean Penn. Great screwed up
mouth.

Ziyi Zhang is, as everyone who saw Crouching Tiger knows, the prettiest young
woman ever.

Gotta go.

I think Gellar's somewhat underrated as an actress (at least when she's
playing Buffy in episodes directed by Whedon; her big screen acting has
been less impressive). But while I like her in that role, she doesn't
really attract me, at least not these days. In the early seasons, before
she'd become so emaciated, she was a lot more physically appealing.

From the BUFFY cast, I prefer Charisma Carpenter, Alison Hannigan, or even
former Buffy fight double Sophia Crawford (a much healthier looking body,
and while she has a generic "hot starlet" face, her sexy working class
British accent transcends it).

Oh, I agree. Glenn Close is no beauty but she sure can "act" like one.
Which proves the fact that it's not just the face or body but one's
mannerisms and confidence that makes one attractive.

I never thought the late Princess Diana as a beauty but her mannerisms and
conduct "made" her beautiful. Some people just "act" pretty and thereby
convince others that they are.

In the last 20 years? In the 60s and early 70s, absolutely. Best voice

Helen Mirren (who IS sexy, and will always be sexy no matter what)

Alison Hannigan a lot too, she's not a real "looker" but she is very sweet
and sensual. They both work out you know, Gellar trains karate and Hannigan
kickboxing i believe (so I guess she's not as innocent as she looks) ;)

Don't believe Press Agent claims. Sarah Michelle Gellar's alleged brown
belt in Taekwondo (a sport that, in actuality, she's never practiced) is
as much a work of fiction as any of BUFFY's scripts. Nor does she do much
if any of her onscreen fighting, despite what she's ocassionally claimed
on talk shows. In seasons 2-5, it was just about _all_ Sophia Crawford,
with Gellar (who generally wasn't even on set when the fight scene was
being shot), later brought in for close-ups. This season, a variety of
(generally less proficient) fight doubles have been used.

This kind of "misrepresentation" goes on all time, so I don't seem much
point in getting outraged about it (fired BUFFY fight coordinator Jeff
Pruitt would probably disagree). For the record, former bodybuilder and
dancer Jean Claude Van Damme's kickboxing credentials are as bogus as
Gellar's Taekwondo, and on his last few movies he's been almost as heavily
doubled as Gellar (according to choreographer Xiong Xing-Xing, _seventeen_
fight doubles -- not stuntmen, but fight doubles -- were used on KNOCK
OFF).

It's very much a part of their culture for actors to "lie" about this
stuff, so I don't think it's a terrible character flaw. Jackie Chan goes
along with the fiction (created by New Line for the US market) that he
does all his own stunts (yes, he's risked his life many times, but not
_every_ time -- nobody who supposedly did _all_ their own stunts, not
Fairbanks Sr., not Lloyd, not Keaton, really did).

In my number one spot - actually the Buffy/Angel casts have an amazing batting

So THAT'S it! I'd noticed the general quality of the fight scenes had
nose-dived this season, particularly the really obvious jumps from SMG to
stunt double. Presumably Ms. Crawford was a good physical match for Gellar,
as in the previous seasons the fights were much more convincing.

James Marsters 'seems' to be pretty good, though. Is he mostly doubled too?

No surprise there. Probably why all his fight scenes go;
spinning-roundhouse-to-opponent's-head (repeat same shot from ten different
camera angles as quickly as possible).

I remember when Commando came out, Schwarzenegger was on a bunch of chat
shows talking about the time 'he' jumped 30 feet off the landing gear of an
airliner. Suuuuuure, Arnie.

A good rule of thumb: if you can't see their face, it ain't really them.
