Renee,
You might check out some movies based on other Jane Austen novels, such
"Sense & Sensibility" starring Emma Thompson & Hugh Grant (this one should
still be in some theaters), and "Pride & Prejudice" starring Greer Garson
& Laurence Olivier. Recently, A&E also did an excellent 6-hour television
series "Pride & Prejudice" starring Colin Firth & Jennifer Ehle.
Also "Jane Eyre" based on Charlotte Bronte's novel of same name.
Also "Wuthering Heights" starring Laurence Olivier.
Enjoy!!
Julia
Try some of these:
˜ "Sense & Sensibility" (now playing at your local $1-$1.50 theatre)
˜ "Tess" (Roman Polanski's adaptation of Hardy's novel _Tess of the
D'Urbervilles_) [NB: this one actually *is* tragic]
˜ "Howards End" (excellent performances all around)

Try "Magnificant Obsession" with (1935) Robert Taylor. Remake (1954)
Rock Hudson. Both set current year.
Also "Portrait of Jenny" and "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" to add a
supernatural note.
For a Tragic Period piece there is "Wuthering Heights."
There must be lots of others.
If you haven't seen it, "A Room With A View" fits your bill.
The Flame is Love (Linda Purl, Timothy Dalton)
Middlemarch (Rufus Sewell, Juliet Aubrey)
Chanel Solitaire (about Coco Chanel - Marie-France Pisier, Rutger Hauer)
Young Catherine (about Catherine the Great of Russia - Julia Ormond)
Re: the Jane Eyre that was recommended - be sure to watch the one with
Timothy Dalton as Mr. Rochester. The other versions are nothing
compared
to this one.
Enjoy!
You might try "Age of Innocence". IMO, it is a great film.
