This was brought to mind by the thread "Actors with only one name," although
I've been mulling it over for some time.

Neil Patrick Harris, Sean Michael Leonard, Robert Sean Leonard, Anthony
Michael Hall, Sara Jessica Parker, Mary-Louise Parker, Mary Stuart
Masterson. There are many others. I just can't think of them now.

Why do they do this? SAG will only let one name be registered by a member
at a time. So, are all the good Anglo names drying up? To me, and actor
having three names just makes it harder to remember.

Most of these folks have been around for a long time, and it's not if they
have to add a middle name because of SAG rules. I think they just sound
better.

The alternative for them would be:

James Jones
Billy Williams
Harry Stanton
Phillip Hoffmann
Phillip Hall
Edward Olmos
Tommy Jones
Billy Thornton

Question: Does Samuel L. Jackson count as three names?

Only if Edward G. Robinson does.

You've got a good point. Sometimes the three names are confusing, but
sometimes they just have a nice ring to them.

I suspect that when they came into the business, those names may well
have been taken, aside from Edward Olmos. And one suspects that
Thornton, being from Arkansas, was probably Billy Bob from a very young
age.

Didn't we just have this thread? And was Helena Bonham Carter mentioned
in either of its incarnations?

A subset of this subject could be Hollywood guys who shortened or
changed their names temporarily. Francis Ford Coppola at one point
dropped the Ford from his name. Producer Sam Spiegel shortened his
name to S.P. Eagle for some movies (including, I think, The African
Queen).

But this one was very much a real actress:

Jessie Royce Landis.

She preferred to be called Royce, btw, according to her memoires, /You Won't
Be So Pretty/, which I had the pleasure of reading earlier this year.
