Ann Harding and William Powell star in this pre-code film directed by John
Cromwell ("Of Human Bondage"-1934, "Prisoner of Zenda"-1937). No great
fireworks or outrageous pre-code content. Just some subtle and sensitive
character development with terrific acting. Harding and Powell have a
certain chemestry...not passionate but comfortable, genuine, and very
naturalistic. The story is relatively simple (and is delivered in just a
little over an hour). Joan (Hardings) places her lover, John (Powell), in a
compromising position forcing marriage. What was a rewarding relationship
then begins to falter under the strain. I love this film.
