What movie? Hero in hospital bed; murderer enters; hero breaks statue, shoots him.

I saw this movie maybe 30 years ago; hero is sick in
hospital, in bed.

Our hero -- we know the bad guys want to kill him, SOON.


Anyway, on table next to his bed stands a
plaster bust of something , maybe a bird (I thought it was
the "Maltese Falcon", but no such luck).

Anyway, this bird or whatever statue, he'd had in his
house; said it was important to him.

Thus, he asked for it to be brought to his hospital
room, to sit on bedside table.

...

After commotion in hall (I think), bad guy sneaks into
our hero's hospital room, raises gun, I think, and BOOM,
bad guy gets shot and killed.

Then camera turns slowly towards the hospital bed; first
into view is the table, with broken plaster on it. Then
turns to our hero, holding the base of the bust, with
a pistol revealed (maybe smoking?).

QUESTION: WHAT WAS THE NAME OF THIS MOVIE?

(I've tried google on various things, to no avail.)
