I've decided that my *favorite* films aren't the ones that provide
sustained involvement (with characters, plot, etc.). Nor are my faves
the ones that are so-bad-they're-good.

Instead, I think I've become a fan of unintentional surrealism.

As examples, consider Hawks/Hughes' "The Outlaw" -- particularly the
cuckoo clock scene at the end and the chunks of ear coming off.

Also, Hathaway's "Rawhide," when the little girl is being shot at like
a duck in an arcade game.

Moments like this just blindside you with unexpected weirdness.

Can anybody think of other analogous examples?

All of 'Far From Heaven' would seem to qualify, except that there's
nothing entertaining in it.

<<The Outlaw...chunks of ear coming off.>>

Damn, that's so realistic -- how did they *do* that anyway?
It could hardly be improved upon with today's CG effects. I mean, where
were his *real* ears??

Exactly. . .it somehow seems realer than real, given the age of the
film.

Good point. Kiss Me Deadly is unbelievable. . .
