Well, you're entitled to your opinion, that's all I can say.
It also appears you have no children. Or you assume that family movies
can't be great movies. (I'll take "The Incredibles" or "Finding Nemo"
over "Attack of the Clones" any day.)

who the fuck wrote this shit list? if this list is based on movie awards
then it is a sham. the movie awards are judged by themselves, they're just
clapping themselves on the back with trophies.
I heard sunshine is ok, but I hadn't seen it yet.
I haven't seen Hana-bi, but I know the director/actor Takeshi Kitano and he
has been in many movies I like
13th warrior was ok, but the newer Beowulf was better. the rest were average
at best.

Jeez, Tony, most of these movies (the ones Ive seen) are pretty poor.
Amores Perros and Mulholland Drive belong on the list...and maybe Eyes WIde

from great. King Kong? Star Wars? Almost Famous? Really?
And you're missing some (obviously?) great films.

"K-pax" (2001) was quirky. I enjoyed it. However, I don't much
like Kevin Spacey. It's hard to say why. He seems dead inside,
somehow -- as though all his emotions are unnatural. You know how
some actors are larger than life, their own personalities
dominating every role they play? Spacey is just the opposite. He
sucks the life out of his roles, and seems to cling desperately to
them, as a way of giving himself the simulation of human emotion.
He's a talented actor, but flat.
-Al-
"LA Confidential" was a pretty good film. Good solid work. Nothing
amazing about it, but it will stand the test of time.

I think it's the best 90's film I've seen .. I don't think there are fifty
better movies ..
I think his appeal might be that he seems depressed or something, he
certainly doesn't appear to me to be 2D like a lot of actors, he has depth

On average, a 4 year old child asks 437 questions a day.
I think the two best movies of the 90's are LA Confidential and JFK.
I find interesting that none mentioned Memento. That movie is the
perfect allegory of what passes by news today.
We are not told about the suffering and the mayhem inflicted by American
policies to the world, and when the victims retaliate killing an
American carpetbagger in Iraq, then we react as if that was coming out
of nowhere. Which to us it was, because we are totally ignorant of the
context.

I also liked this/those.
>> Passion of the Christ (2003)
Interesting in that this could get no award in the US because
there was no category for foreign language films made in the US.
Much of the film was in Aramic or Hebrew.
>> Vanilla Sky (2001)
The original Spanish version of Vanilla Sky - "Open Your Eyes"
is a far better film. It hasn't suffered from the
'hollywoodization' - eg bigger/flashier cars, FX, etc.
One ineteresting thing about Open Your Eyes is that Penelope
Cruz plays the same role in both the original Spanish version, and
also in the English version with Tom Cruise.

And I really liked Magnolia - though some people thought it was
a bit long.
I thought he was great in The Usual Suspect. He did get a
best supporting actor Oscar for that role.
I thought his portrayal of Bobby Darin was a bit off - probably
because of Spacey's age playing Darin much younger.
Bill
Since most of the Academy voters are Jewish, something tells me
the "Passion of the Christ" wouldn't have won the Oscar in any case.
-Al-
I haven't seen the Spanish version. However, another instance
where the foreign original is better than the American remake is
"Nightwatch." I watched the original, then tried to watch the
remake, and gave up about twenty minutes into it. Not worth the
effort.

Someday I'll have to learn Spanish so I don't have to try to keep
up with the sub-titles. Another great film from Spain is "Talk To
Her" - which got an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay - by Pedro
Almodovar - who also directed it.
As to Nightwatch - I see 3 that fit that title on IMDB.
There is a Russian version from 2004, a Danish version from 1994,
and a 1997 USA version, which is a remake of the Danish version.
Am I correct in assuming you are refering to the Danish version?
Bill
Yes, the Danish version. You wouldn't expect the Danes to be able
to make a decent movie, but by God, at least one of them can. I
tried to watch the American remake a day after watching the
original Danish version. Not a flattering comparison for the
remake. Haven't run across the Russian version yet.
-Al-
Oh, wait, I know the Russian film you mean. It's a completely
different film. Very good, though. It's about modern vampire
hunters in Russia.

I think you've just summarized the root cause of every conflict in human
history, including the current situation in the Middle East ..
And that should be more of a reason to include it among the 20 best
movies of the last 10 years, I think. It is one film that shows you how,
even when you are paying attention, and what you see is true, you still
misinterpret it, because you lack context. I would make it mandatory for
children in grade 10 or 11 to watch it.
VV
I didn't realise nightwatch was remade, I saw the first one so when it came
around again I thought it was the same film being re-released to more
cinemas.

Whether it was good or bad would make no difference because
there was not category in which it could compete. Now if it had
been made outside the US it could have competed in the foreign film
category.

Actually, all foreign-language films are eligible for Best Picture, as
well as all the other technical categories--
As was "Life is Beautiful", "Il Postino" and "Indochine".
"Passion" was fully eligible for Best Picture, as it was for
Cinematography, Makeup and Editing--
In the end, it was disqualified from Best Picture competition, however,
on the grounds of being crap. :)

Actually, Aramaic and Latin.
However, as a movie which opened commmerically in Los Angeles, it was
eligible for every Oscar for which it qualified -- picture, director,
screenplay, all the acting and technical awards. It wasn't eligible,
obviously, documentary or animation or short film awards, nor was it
eligible for Best Foreign Language film.
But look at all the non-English language films that have received
nominations and won Oscars -- Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Volver,
Pan's Labyrinth, Life Is Beautiful. No rule prevented Passion Of The
Christ from receiving Academy Award nominations.

Some pretty good movies on there. Not "United 93" though. It was a
very boring film. All it had going for it was its connection with
9/11. It wasn't quite as poor as Oliver Stone's World Trade Center
movie, but it was poor.

I thought it was very impressive. Greengrass is one of the most
inetersting directors of the last decade.
All it had going for it was its connection with

What do you mean bu thta?
I mean that because "United 93" was connected with the events of
9/11 it had built-in audience interest. Really, it was nothing but
another airplane disaster flick, and we've seen to many of those.
"Snakes On a Plane" was a better film than "United 93."

Actually it was completely different than any other disaster flick.
You're right that this film got more attention than it would have had if
it wasn't 9/11 related. Mainly *because* it was so different. This was
more like an arthouse airplane disaster film.

If you don't know what you're doing, do it neatly.
True enough. But the funny thing is, "Passion of the Christ"
wasn't anti-Jewish at all. It tried to be faithful to the New
Testament books. It was perceived as anti-Jewish, however, and
that doomed it as far an Oscar went. It also doomed Gibson, the
split second his films stop earing over $100 million each at the
box office.
-Al-
And it was NOT shown locally - Orlando Florida - because one
of the 'radio ministers' got on his high horse and caused so much
grief that no theatres would show it.
What is/was ironic, is that I knew him before he became a
"minister" and was a radio salesman at a station I worked for.
And for some reason ISTR - and it may be incorrect - that we was
reformed alcoholic .
And after the above brouhahah he wound up spending 4 years in
prison for attempting to hire a hit man to kill a person who was
supposedly his best friend as he was having an affair with that
friends wife - and I guess wanted her for his own.
He now works for the ACLU.
That is almost a complete antithesis of his stand when he
was a 'radio minister'.
All you have to do is make enough noise and people run scared.
