I'm doing some research on the connection between cricket and the movies.

I've read from time to time about Indian cricketers who have made guest
appearances or even starred in films in India, however the Internet Movie
Database does not provide any details which are of any help.

If anyone can supply me with any information about cricketers who have
appeared in Indian movies, I would be most appreciative.

Thanks,
Rick

I know that Sandeep Patil and Syd Kirmani starred in an Indian Hindi movie.
(Don't remember its name) Sandeep Patil Played hero's role while
kirmani was a villain.

Sunil Gavaskar also starred in an Indian Marathi movie , again I don't
remember its name .

Both of these movies were big flops.

Sandeep Patil was the leading actor in a movie called "Kabhi Ajnabi The".
The movie also starred Syed Kirmani. Sunil Gavaskar had acted in
some Marathi movies. I don't think he's appeared in a Hindi movie.

Here goes, from whatever I can remember ---

Cricketer Film Kind of role
-------------------------------------------------------------
Sandeep Patil Kabhie ajnabi the Hero
Syed M. H. Kirmani ---- do ---- Villain
Sunil Gavaskar Maalaamal Himself (guest)
Premaachi Saawli Hero
(Marathi)
Kapil Dev Cricketer Himself (guest)

I am sure there are many more... I also recall Abhinav
Chaturvedi --- acted in 'Hum Log' the teleseries plus films like
'Bhrashtachar' and 'Parbat ke us paar' --- as a sometime Ranji Trophy
player for Delhi.

;-) Not to mention the forthcoming movie with Sachin Tendulkar
and Aishwarya Rai as the lead pair... ;-) *just kidding*

Another film I can think of with cricket-based theme (may or
may not have had real cricketers act) is 'Awwal Number' by Dev Anand.

Interestingly enough, Subhash Ghai in his pre-bigtime days
made two movies that were named after popular cricket players at that
time (though neither movie had anything else to do with cricket or
cricketers) --- "Kalicharan" and "Vishwanath".

Sunil Gavaskar did appear in a hindi movie. It was a comedy starring
Naseeruddin Sah and Satish Sah. The name of the movie is MALAMAAL. It is
based on the movie Brewster's (spell ?) Billion. In the movie Naseer,
after having inherited a fortune organizes a cricket match against
Gavaskar. ( Gavaskar only vs. Naseer's eleven).

Salim Durrani had the leading role against Parveen Babi in 'Charitra', one

The movie "Maalamaal" was based on Brewster's Millions *ing Richard
Pryor. I would like to try and start a thread here. This ("Maalamaal"
i.e.) is one of
the two movies I know of *ing Harindranath Chattopadhyay (Sarojini
Naidu's brother). The other one was the comedy classic "Tere Ghar
Ke Saamne" *ing Dev Anand, Nutan and H.C. and Om Prakash as warring
fathers. Does anyone know of any other movies in which he acted?
Dilip.

how about Kapil Dev in a Raj Babbar Movie? The climax of the movie was on
a cricket ground where Kapil Dev was playing cricket.

Well apart from those mentioned here, L.Sivaramakrishnan
the leg spinner from Madras had a cameo in a Tamil movie
called "Raja Kayya Vecha" starring Prabhu and Revathi.

I think there was a Kannada movie starring Kumar Bangarappa
that featured some cricketers. Also, what about the
Dev Anand, Aamir Khan movie - I am sure some cricketer
must have had a cameo in that one - Awwal Number (?).

Three movies that had Harindranath Chattopadhyay immediately come to mind. They
are:
Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam. He played the "ghadi babu" whose job it was to
keep all the clocks in the haveli running.
Bawarchi (starring Rajesh Khanna) in which he played the patriarch of a
fractious family (Khanna played a role somewhat similar to Rekha's role in
Khoobsoorat which appeared many years later). In fact, he(HNC) also
provided voice to parts of a song in Bawarchi.
Aashirwad (starring Ashok Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar and Sumita Sanyal). He played
a childhood friend of Ashok Kumar.
I would think there are several other movies in which HNC had a role.

So did Kapil and Kirmani in one Tamil film release sometime in the late 80's.
I am not able to recall the name of the movie though. Even the billboards had
Kapil's cut-outs!

Well, did Kapil act ? And which movie was this ?

BTW, then even DARR had a scene where they shot an actual test match
between India and I guess SriLanka or England at Bombay.
They showed Kumble getting a few wickets.

Lets not forget Salim Durrani who was the first cricketer to act in movies.
The movie also starred Parveen Babi.

Kirmani was a villain in Sandeep Patil Movie.

Sunil Gavaskar definitely acted in a Hindi movie. He played the part of
himself in the movie MAALAMAAL. The movie starred mainly Naseeruddin Shah.

Yes Kapil acted in a 1992 movie called Karamyodha. It starred Raj Babbar ,
Dimple , Javed Jaffery. One of the best thrillers in Hindi movie history.
