The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has entered a strange new
world where a substance harmless to fauna and essential to the
continued existence of flora is the target of an "endangerment
finding." During its first 36 years, the EPA focused on demonstrably
hazardous substances used or emitted by manufacturing and
transportation industries, agriculture, energy producers and
individuals. The menace du jour is carbon dioxide, a substance for
which humans have a high tolerance and without which all plant life
would die, and humanity along with it.
The argument is CO2 caused by the burning of fossil fuels causes
warming because the gas traps heat in the atmosphere. This trend, we
are told, can be harmful to humans. What we seldom hear is
historically, civilizations have fared better during warm times than
cold periods. Moreover, nobody knows what causes climate change,
which has come and gone without human intervention. As James
Barrante, retired professor of physical chemistry at Southern
Connecticut State University, has patiently pointed out in these
pages, rising CO2 levels don't cause global warming; in fact, global
warming causes CO2 levels to rise. That's because oceans release CO2
as they warm and absorb it as they cool.
The EPA's "endangerment finding" guarantees more jobs will migrate to
countries that do not impose such onerous restrictions on
manufacturers. Simultaneously, it will increase the costs of energy
and products, including motor vehicles. And it will breed wasteful
legislation and costly litigation, as industry tries to protect its
interests while pushing Congress to enact something less onerous.
Add to these economic hazards the current 10 percent unemployment
rate, and you have a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll that found just
45 percent of Americans believe human activity causes warming,
compared with 56 percent just two years ago. The growing skepticism
may be rooted in self-interest, or it may have something to do with
the Climategate e-mail scandal. Perhaps, too, it has begun to sink in
that no discernible warming has occurred in 11 years despite a
continuing increase in CO2 levels.
If the polls, Professor Barrante and other scientists who share his
view are right, why is our government doing this to us? Simply, it's
all about control. If the government can control energy use, it can
control every aspect of our lives -- what cars we drive, where we
work, what we do for recreation, what we eat and drink, even how many
children we have and how we bring them up. In the fullness of time,
the so-called climate crisis will wane, but the control mechanisms
established in the name of controlling CO2 emissions will remain
firmly in place.
This, and a crushing burden of debt, will be our legacy to our
grandchildren and great-grandchildren if we allow the government to
continue on its glide path to socialism, or worse.
