OK. So what's your opinion about it? Who sounds better?
IIRC, there is a Tamil movie called "Yaar Nee" or "Nee Yaar" which means
"Who are you?". It was either a remake of "Woh Kaun thi?" or the other way
around.
P. Susheela has sung the Tamil version songs of the Lata songs "Naina barse"
and possibly others. I have just heard this one song. Lata is way better. I
think the movie stars Jayalalitha (in Sadhna's role) and MGR (in Manoj
Kumar's role). Does anyone have any PSTATS about this movie? No luck with
IMDB. In particular, I want to know if it preceded "Woh Kaun thi" and who
the MD was.

Lata sounds a shade better(especially when conveying emotions and voice
control in the higher octaves). If we use Lata's singing as a metric,
Suseela gets a high score.

I agree with Srinivas, Suseela does get high score. In fact, in the
following example, it is difficult to decide who is better.
"kE jAbi aay" (Bengali)
Lyrics and Music by Salil Chaudhary.
Non-filmi geet (1967).
Singer: Lata Mangeshkar.
The same tune was used by Salil Chaudhary again in a Malyalam song.
"Omana tingazh pakshi" (Malayalam)
Lyrics: Vaylar. Music: Salil Chaudhary
Film: Ragam (1975).
Singer: P.Suseela
There is a slight variation in the tune of mukhda. I'd like to hear
other learned folks' opinion.
In the interview, she claims that she does not have good command of
other languages, other than Telugu. I guess she is being modest.
Because in her Tamil and Kannada songs, the pronunciation is perfect. I
read somewhere (I think it was disussion on tamil film music homepage),
that during the initial stages of her career in tfm, lyricists were
appalled at her tamil pronunciation. She subsequently underwent rigorous
tainning in tamil. However, her Malayalam pronunciation is not as
perfect as S.Janaki's - who is fluent in Malayalam. Some of the songs
sound more Tamil than Malayalam.
Despite these minor aberations, she remains my personal favorite. Too
bad, she is known elsewhere as Lata of South and not P.Suseela. Like
Lata, she has had a long innings. However, *and unlike Lata*, has anyone
noticed that no singer (in south ofcourse) has accused her of hera-pheri
or sabotage etc? Harmony among south-indian singers (specially the
female singers) is an interesting aspect to note (and perhaps an
interesting topic for discussion too...)
Regards,
- Dinesh Krishnajois.
Specifically in Telugu fims, we can roughly map the female singers
with those of Hindi films. In the 50's there were other singers like
Jikki,Leela,Bhanumanti in addition to the two who played the long
innings, i.e Suseela and Janaki.
BTW,OP Nayyar scored for a Telugu movie "Neerajanam"(in late 70's/early
80's) in which Janaki sounded like Asha in the song "Ghallu ghalluna".

Recently there was a thread on Lata's songs in other Languages.
I am not sure about the number of songs that Lata sang in Telugu.
However, these are her first Telugu songs. They are from Santanam(1955)
composed by Susarla Dakshinamurthy.First one is a solo and second is a
duet with Ghantasala.

Lata's pronounciation is quite good much better than say
Rafi's pronounciation in his Telugu songs.

Hmmm.. when did this become LatAnjali ? :). My comments (praises) were
re. Suseela.

P.S.: Now, before any Lata fans pick up their guns ......As far as music
and music-business goes Lata is god's gift to earth.

Let me pick up my pen:)Someone said that "a pen(key board) is more
powerful than the sword(gun)".
All characters are fictious.I hope mischevous minds with convoluted
logics won't twist this story:)
There are three Friends,Raj,Raju and Raja.Raj's school teacher asks
him to write essays on a Cow,Bombay and Calcutta.
Raj writes...
Cow:A cow has 4 legs.It gives milk.....
Bombay:Its now called Mumbai. Its the commercial capital of India.
Bombay has a colony called Andheri.Raju lives in Andheri. He has a
cow.His cow has 4 legs.It gives milk.....
Calcutta:Its now called Kolkota. Its the capital of West Bengal.
Calcutta has a colony called Tollygunge.Raja lives in Tollygunj.
He has a cow.His cow has 4 legs.It gives milk.....
Raj's teacher gets angry, gives him a zero for the essays and asks
him for an explanation.
Raj says "gaai(cow) merii maataa hai
mujhe kuch nahii aata hai".
The teacher replies
"Bail teraa baap hai
marks denaa paap hai".

Sorry Srinivas, but your "pen" makes even less sense than the reasons as to why
you might have put in a Lata factoid in a P. Susheela posting? Have the Lata
sycophants gone back to their part-time jobs in their offices? :)

In the thread the following subjects were covered
.Suseela and her songs in Telugu
.Suseela's comparision with Lata
.Suseela's pronounciation in languages other than her mother tongue.
Now talking about Lata's pronounciation(especially in south Indian
languages) is not too much of a digression.
Now when it comes to using my "pen"...
In RMIM threads diverge almost tangentially and many times
no body cares to change the topic leave alone start a new thread.
So even if ppl. think that talking about Lata in as Suseela
thread is a digression, it's nothing unusual on RMIM...
and my "pen" was sarcastically aimed at this...
