Film star GOVINDA'S mother NIRMALA DEVI has died on
June 16, 1996. Govinda was very close to his mother and this
tragedy has affected him greatly. He has cancelled all shootings
since then and will take much time to recover from her loss.
My heart and blessings go out to Govinda during these tough
times. One of the biggest reasons I respect and am a fan
of Govinda is the great respect he showed to his mother. In
almost every interview given by Govinda he thanks God and
his mother for the status he has today, and of course his fans.

Its unfortunate that a reasonably well known classical singer of
her time, Nirmala Devi should be known as Govinda's mother at the
time of her death.
I have heard only a couple of thhumri's by her and don't know
much about her. Would some knowledgeable rmic'ers know and post
some more info about her and her music.

I heard from a knowledgable RMIMer that his father is most probably
Arun Kumar, the famous singer of the 40's. Could somebody confirm
this. I was also told that he's most likely different from Aroon
Kumar, the MD of Parineeta. Again I would appreciate if somebody can
confirm this.

AMEN! She is a fairly well-known singer, though I personally have not
heard too many of her recordings. The mother of film star
Govinda...interesting.

Are you absolutely sure she was the same Nirmala Devi who sang
classical music ? I doubt it.

I think Govinda's father was a film actor in some era, a not so
successful one at that. I remember a Govinda interview in Zee TV
where he said that his whole family used to be supported by one
person, his mother.

If it is the same Nirmala Devi we are talking about, I vividly
remember (her sonorous voice) and the vibrant thumri she sang
with Smt. Lakshmi Shankar that goes something like 'Sanwariya...'
Wasn't she also known as Smt. Nirmala Arun for a while...?
Unfortunately, don't know much more... Rajan Babu might know
more...
Regards.
