Just saw Kalapani aka Siraichalai (the Tamil version). Thought it was pretty
good. Some gorgeous visuals of the Andaman and Nicobar islands, powerful tale
that was told well. Some adventurous camera work that pulled off some
difficult scenes with elan. The actors were great...can anyone tell me more
about the director, Priyadarshan?

Priyadarshan has been around on the Malayalam film scene for quite
a while. One of his major strengths is to be able to tell a simple
story with a lot of flair and style and a feather-light touch.
Among some of his better movies in Malayalam that I remember are
1) "Thaalavattam" (English translation?)(Adapted from "One Flew Over The
Cuckoo's Nest")
2) "Vellayaanagalude Naattil" (In the Land of the White Elephant)
3) "Mukundetta Sumitra Villikkunnu" (Mukund bhaiya, Sumitra is calling)
This one is adapted from Sai Paranjpye's "Katha"
4) "Kilukkam" (Shaking?)
5) "Kireedam" (The Crown)
4 and 5 were remade in Hindi as "Muskurahat" *ing Jay Mehta, Revathi
and Annu Kapoor and "Gardish" *ing Jackie Shroff and Dimple
respectively.
AFAIR, both were directed by Priyadarshan in Hindi too.
1-5 all had great performances by Mohanlal, who is a standard feature
in most Priyadarshan movies. Also present in most movies is a cast of
excellent Malayali comedians, who have often been the highlights of
the movies.
"Kala Pani" is the first time that he has gone really big-budget, and
from the reviews, it seems to have been a smooth transition.
Dilip.

Well, the latest weekly edition of Hindu Online has an
interview with Priyadarshan and it talks about his previous
movies, entry into Hindi cinema and future projects.
Check it out.

I don't think siraichAlai is dubbed. As far as I know Kaalapani is
simultaneously is made in 3 languages viz., Malayalam, Tamil & Hindi.
That is the actors lip movements are different version for different
languages.... No?

Great movie. Loved Tabu in the movie. She has slimmed down and looks
cool. The director is Priyadarshan. He directed the movie Gardish. He is
a good director. Though I did feel a bit let down in the sense he talks
of this movie being a tribute to fredom fighters, though the story of the
freedom fighters in Kala Pani is woven into the fabric of this story it
it not to be considered a tribute.

Watch this movie to see why I consider Amrish Puri to be the best villain
around. Also see Gardish to see Amrish Puri as a character actor.
