Does anyone remember this TV series from Doordarshan in the late
80's.It was pretty creepy and had good tight direction until the
finale when it became a little haywire.DD had some series in the 80's
another example would be Karamchand with Pankaj Kapoor doing his best
impression of Peter Falk's Colombo!

I found Pankaj Kapoor's Karamchand very funny. There were some classic
episodes like the one about 'ration card'. Very satirical and funny at
times. One joke I remember when Karamchand trips over the guard at a
5-star hotel and the guard's moustache (false) comes out:

Karamchand to Hotel guard: Nakli moonch kyon rakhthe ho?
Guard: Kaam ka Majboori hain, Bade moonch ugana padtha hain
Karamchand: Tho asli kyon nahin ugathe ho?
Guard: Biwi ko cheekh aati hain!

LOL! The agony of having to go back to school on Mondays was very much
relieved by the anticipation of seeing everyone's favourite
carrot-munching, one-liner spouting "sir you are a genius! (shut up
kitty)" private detective
at 10.

Completely agree. They also acted in a very good film called
"Yeh Woh Manzil to Nahin". It was
an art film which had one song. Ghalib's
hazaaro.n Khvaahishe.n aisii ki har Khvaaish pe dam nikale
bahut nikale mere armaa.N lekin phir bhii kam nikale.

I thought that the film was *brilliant*. Sort of Ardh Satya in a UP student
union setting.

It was all about how a young scientist doing some research on leprosy
is frustrated at every step by the system. He "dies" when he leaves
the country
for better prospects in the US. ;-)

Hi filmography includes Jalwa and Ek Ruka Huan Faisla. He
came back to television in the late 90's to do a detective serial with his
wife Supriya Pathak. The serial was called Mohandas B.A. LLB.
I'm sure RAMLI folks will get the connection with the Mohandas
& Karamchand names of the main characters.

Story goes that it was a real story of a Calcutta based scientist. Only
difference being he actually committed suicide, whereas in the film PK
leaves for US. Director Tapan Sinha probably opted for a 'happier' ending.

What a movie and what acting by PK. The scene where he lam-blasts his
interviewers in the boardroom was DA best.

BTW for National award for best acting it was a tie between PK and
Amitabh (Agneepath), before Amitabh won it by 1 vote. He was voted
by a moron who thought mainstream movie deserves more. Late Ashok
Kumar was the chief Jury and was damn pissed with that.

I also recommend Tapan Sinha's Aantak, a bong movie starring Soumitra
Chatterjee. Story of a old man who witnesses a murder and is harassed.

It was shown in Doordarshan sunday afternoon regional language movie
in 1988. But it was simply engrossing.

How regrettable.Even though I liked Agneepath and Amitabh's
performance(though somewhat campy),I would definitely would have
preferred PK to get the award as I am sure he deserved it more though
I havent even seen the film in question.

Compared to the horror on TV today it is sublime. Most are Zee Horror
Show clones!Thats of course not a good thing. In 1995 however there was
a good series called Shaayad, produced and written by and starring
mostly Bongs,it was very well done and atmospheric. Some stories were
lifted from Twilight Zone and obscure B movies of the 70's,overall
very good series.

In that case he made it too "happy" and pat. Even without this background
info everyone tends to agree that they shouldn't have said that he was able
to continue his research in the US. Instead they might have shown him joining
an MNC to do research on anti-wrinkle cream or something. ;-0
And at the risk of saying too much, I can vouch for the fact that
there are researchers who are getting f-ked around pretty much as shown.

You gave me goosebumps by reminding me of that. ;-) I like AB, but
if he won against PK, then he definitely doesn't deserve his national
award.

That's the problem with the cable revolution. The captive audience that
DD used to provide for sensible "parallel" cinema has disappeared. Even if
people are still making these films, there is just no one to watch it. :-(

In the first episode of Karamchand they had delved briefly
on his history - how he got a BA, LLB, became Inspector in the
police force, was forced to resign due to corruption charges etc
and now was free-lancing as a private detective.

So IMO, Pankaj Parwhateverhissurnameis had deliberately named
his detective as Karamchand, his vision of a modern crusader for the
"truth". That underlined reference to his qualifications as BA, LLB was
probably to make sure that people made that connection. No one did.
But when Kapoor made Mohandas BA, LLB, the penny finally dropped in
my head about the earlier BA, LLB. ;-) Jalwa probably had a lot of very
clever references like this too.

The movie actually mentions in the end that it is based upon real events
and that the person committed suicide. That last bit was too much for
me. Great movie. I also liked the way they portrayed people surrounding
the main "hero": his friend who is in dilemma as to do the "Right
Things" or not; his wife who is frustrated because he doesn't succeed;
and his friends who are always "there for him".

By the way, with the kind of person that he (PK) is shown as, I think it
would have been too much "out of line" with everything if he was shown
as researching on an anti-wrinkle cream :)

Personally, I don't see why people give Agneepath such a high rating.
Amitabh was OK, not very good IMHO. And I didn't find the story too much
engrossing either.

I don't know nearly as much as you guys about what appears on Indian
television, but I would love to see some of these parallel cinema films that
never seem to be available via video here in the US.
And this thread that started about Indian TV serials - does anyone happen to
know if there are any reliable guides/books published that detail a history of
Indian television dramas/comedies? An English language book would be preferred,
but Hindi language books are OK, I can get help to read it and have grown
accustomed to having what's on the screen translated for me by patient
relatives :o)

It was standard Amitabh, nothing new, nothing great, Mukul Anand
substituting style for actual characterization. And Anand was always a
director with ZERO story sense. ;-) Bachchan probably deserved a
national award for Deewar but certainly not for Agneepath. And not
against a bravura perfomance like Pankaj Kapoor's. :-/

I can't help you with hunting down these films, but I came across this
(probably dated!) list posted on RAMLI when I was looking for
discussions
on Basu Chaterjee. Enjoy!

Hello RAMLI'ers,

This compilation of movies by some of the very best in
Indian cinema was originally posted on RMIM (rec.music.indian.misc)
(by Piyush Bhagat and Amin).

I made further additions to the list of films by the directors,
and also added some more directors who were left out.

The directors whose films are included in the list are :
(in no particular order)

Basu Chatterjee, Hrishikesh Mukherjee,
Gulzar, Bapu (?)
Yash Chopra, Vidhu Vinod Chopra,
Sai Paranjape, Ramesh Sippy,
Vijay (Goldie) Anand, Bimal Roy,
Guru Dutt, Gautum Ghosh,
Shyam Benegal, Ketan Mehta,
Mrinal Sen, Raj Kapoor and
Govind Nihalani

Surely, at least for some of the above directors, the list of their
films
is not complete.

Additions, updates, corrections and comments are welcome.
Pl help make the list more complete.

I am surprised the name of Satyajit Ray does not appear in this list.
Specially since the likes of Mrinal Sen, Gautam Ghosh, Shyam Benegal
and Govind Nihalni (directors of the so called off-beat movies) have
been included. Ray is regarded by many in India (as well as at the
international level) to be the very best India has produced till date.
I
am including his filmography below (excluding the documentaries).
Also I feel that films by the following directors ought to be included

(i) Adoor Gopalakrishnan (sp?)
(ii) M.S. Satthu
(iii) Ritwik Ghatak

to make the list more complete.

Pankaj Kapoor was too good in the serial 'Kab taq Pukaroo.n'
and in another serial (specially for Lucknow Dorrdarshan) 'Neem ka Ped'

They showed "Neem Ka Ped" on main DD as well. I remember seeing it in
Delhi.

Anyone knows how the ending was? Did his son (Budhai?) become a "bada
aadmi"?

o certainly he did! IIRC he became some minister, zamindari system was
abolished
and the zamindar's son was working under PK's son. that's all i can vaguely
recall
but i dont remember how exactly it ended. the serial's casting song was also
a gem - Gulzar and Jagjit Singh

mu.Nh kii baat sune har ko_ii, dil ke dard ko jaane kaun
aawaazo.n ke baazaaro.n me.n Kaamoshii pahachaane kaun

was this available in any of JS's albums?

Yes, But it is not by Gulzar. IIRC, It is by Nida Fazli.
The album is called 'Insight'.

I have seen Raakh twice, and I don't understand what people liked in
that movie. It was, IMO, an "art movie" which showed things because it
was supposed to be an "art movie". Circular? No, let me explain.

The movie was very slow. Then, all characters acted the way one should
expect from a depressing, highly un-original movie. PK for example, acts
as the helpless cop. Or Aamir, as the helpless guy who can't do a thing
for his girlfriend. You always know what is going to happen, (nothing
wrong with that in itself), and the movie doesn't have any sub-plots or
any events that would make one sympathise with any of the characters.

I generally like art movies (whatever that may mean), but this one, never.

Unfortunately, Shroff seems to be endowed with a particularly large
facial orifice to consume the intoxicant, which he does successfully a
full 15 seconds before Shah Rukh.

What do you expect? It is hardly a Jerry Bruckheimer Michael Bay
production!

Then, all characters acted the way one should

It was original in that the vengence and bloodshed was not glamorised
and that Supriya was less devastated by her rape than Aamir Khan!!Also
she does not fall for Aamir Khan.

PK for example, acts

Of course it had the sub plot about the kid who lived in the fort and
made a friendship with Aamir Khan who wanted to get indoors once the
monsoons set in.Also the scenes of the rapist's affection for his son
was interesting...

This is one of the few movies I liked.
