I always felt that Jackie(aka Jaikishen) Shroff had the makings of a a star
with Poise and that extra executive-ness about him.He has indeed proved me
right in a lot of his films.I think he is like the Tommy Lee Jones
of Bollywood(remebering Tommy in only his pro-goody roles here).
He totally ruled in "Parinda".But the roles which make me sit uptight are his
"Police officer" roles. I think he even overshadowed the prime supposed-to be
attraction of "Khalnayak" Sanjay Dutt in the scenes between him and Sanjay.
I think he looks great in a Coatn'Suit especially when he is playing the Police Officer.
Other films where he did great as a police officer are "Hafta Bandh"(i recommend
this average hit unknown movie) and "Ram Lakhan". He gets the Supporting actor
award almost every year for that Smart and Poise acting from him.

But one film in which Jackie just takes the Cake and was wrongfully
ignored for the best Actor award to Nana(i think) was "Gardish".
Man, what a role he had and what a performance.Exemplary.This movie
was a remake of Malayalam hit "Kireetam" performed by Mohanlal
and directed by Priyadarshan(who also directed Gardish) and MohanLal
himself(who had got a national award for this movie) Praised
Jackie in Gardish. For those people having missed this movie(it was
an okay hit btw), don't miss it as i rate it among the TOP 5 Hindi
movies of the 90s.Amrish Puri also performed excellently as Jackie's
father in this movie. This role required Jackie to perform with Restraint
and still capture the sympathetic hearts of the viewers and he rightfully
did so.

3 scenes which are Great to watch and skillfully directed are:

1)The chasing scene over the top of the Taxis in Bombay when all those
taxis had been stranded in traffic.Excellent.

2)The final fight between Jackie and the Villian.

3)The song with Amrish Puri and Jackie Shroff.

I have no doubt in saying that if Jackie does more roles which have
less of meaningless Masala dances but which are major in the film
and not supporting, he will be among the Top 5 in Bollywood for sure
but also he will be remembered as a Class actor in the whole of India.

shridhar.

PS: Isn't it ironical that Jackie comes from a "Chawl" background
and is usually more Poise than the other more well-off actors?!

Note: This post is not meant for Anand Tiwari's eyes. He should skip
it NOW!!

:)

So, Shridhar, which are the other 4 movies that you would place
(as of now... let's not leave one spot open for the rest of the
decade.. so assume that we have reached the end of the 90s as
of today...) among the top 5?? Anybody else want to name some??

He has a rather extensive modeling career as his bg too.
So, that might have given him the "Poise"...

Later,
Ikram.

Hi Sridhar,
I think that "Aar Ya Paar" required a better preformance than
Gardish. It is very close, though, but in terms of pure acting
required, AYP was much more demanding. Just my opinion:)

I think kireedam was directed by sibi malayil and not by priyadarshan.
They also made part 2 of the version "Chenkol" which is not as good as
kireedam but certainly worth seeing for Mohanalal..
